UPDATE (6PM 10/11/11): It’s official. Equality California has announced that opponents of the FAIR Education Act have failed to get enough signatures to bring the LGBT-inclusive law to a public vote.
What an encouraging sign—perhaps Americans aren’t as ready to buy into hateful lies as we thought.
StopSB48.com, the California anti-gay group deceptively collecting signatures in hopes of overturning the FAIR Education Act just sent out an e-mail blast saying, “it is doubtful we will get the number of signatures we need to qualify.” They say that “the last several deliveries of mail have not been what was expected and a large number of petitions have been pulled out because of errors” and add, “From all appearances, we would need a miracle to qualify this referendum.” But We’ll will restrain our laughter and celebration until the news becomes official.

This sounds more like a rallying tactic to pull in more signatures.

Or a way to placate us “Ebil Gheys” from going over to their place and doing some undesired interior decorating (LOL)
Personally, I think that there are people in the Wingnut Pile that have gotten the clue that they’ve lost their war to preserve prejudice/bigotry and are only waiting for the last of the truly brain damaged among them to catch up to the notion.
They fight on as they have always done but when they realize that they are going to fail at some objective, they just stop.
Heck, one of the anti-Equal Marriage reps has pretty much admitted that it is no longer an issue of IF marriage equality will federal law but rather a question of WHEN — still trying to delay the inevitable but at least recognizing that it is inevitable.
Maybe they are even trying to find a way to get mainstream America to not completely loathe them once they’ve lost the war — probably a good idea if one is actually trying to preserve the Wingnut Pile from becoming totally irrelevant in future elections.
(Though to be honest, I’d love to see the unsalvageable relic finally sink out of politics forever.)
