You are correct, a little empathy goes a long way, and that would be the case with someone who were an ally. I didn’t know who Peaty was until looking him up, but he’s most definitely straight, and since he is not an official “ally” (to my knowledge), he is clueless about the oppressive Hungarian government. Most straights are clueless unless it directly affects them. Most straights in the U.S. assumed marriage equality was nationwide prior to Obergefell.

Am also a big fan of Adam Peaty; his looks and his professionalism. I read his book and it was really interesting. I’m able to separate out any (potential) difference between his professional life and his personal life. I’m happy for him to praise the pool and the cities in which he competes without drawing attention to the government of the country. To me, they’re different things that need not mix.
In the same way that Lewis Hamilton is able to praise a track for being tough or interesting or challenging, without it meaning he supports the government (eg he has criticised them before for lack of LGBTQ+ laws).
