Charles Barkley: It’s Okay To Be Gay On A Sports Team As Long As You Don’t Stink

If somebody is gay, that’s their own business. But it bothers me how people try to say that jocks are not going to like a gay… I think gay people should be allowed to get married and, God bless them, that’s their own business. Listen, if a guy can’t play, that’s the only time we don’t want to play with him. We don’t care about all that extracurricular stuff.”

—Former NBA MVP and commentator Charles Barkley discussing gay athletes and the Sean Avery kerfuffle, on SiriusXM Radio.

he loves him some homosexuality-people; we loooves us some enlightened, secure-in-their-manhood, athletic-hero types.

    you sir, are a gentleman.
    more of you. much more.

Is this post supposed to be anti-Barkley? The guy comes out in support of gay marriage, in support of gay rights, etc. and you guys are going to be snarky about his word use?

If you read what he said, he’s of the opinion that it’s ok to be anything on a sports team, as long as you can play.
In other words, if you’re straight (or gay or born female or extremely short or orange) it’s not an issue as long as you can play.
He’s saying that the only issue that matters or should matter on a team is athletic performance.

Very mis-leading headline. Queerty yet again making, or trying to make, something out of nothing. You know it is this kind of foul reporting that is just as negative to our movement as anything else. I swear sometimes we are our own worst enemy.

I wish quotes like this would make it into the mainstream press. [and if I missed seeing it there, that’s my bad.]

As my beloved-future-stalker / stalkee. MisterDivKid stated, Mr. Barkley is indeed a gentleman. And a sage.

The use of “a gay” doesn’t bother me: I should check the linguistics blogs to see if anyone’s studied that usage. Gimme a few days & I’ll get back to Qty if something turns up. (Unless I get distracted by some thread on Ukranian neologies a.g.a.i.n.)

Calling someone a gay is better than the fags and queers they are referred to on this sorry site.

    @divkid: Ditto’ing you comment. :3

He didn’t have to talk about this at all. Charles Barkley is cool as hell.

  • IAbuseGays

@Geoff B: He’s been that way for a long time. Gay sites like this like to attack people of color as homophobes, but they regularly ignore the large number of supporters.

    Charles Barkley rocks!

So young “hot” white hetro wrestler comes in support of gay people and he is praised and looked at the next coming of “gaychrist.”

Older out of shape black hetro basketball player comes out in support and he is nit picked on for a freakin word……Different copany same shite queerty.

And no I am not black before you go there

  • Jeffree

@doublestandard: I’m sure you’re trying to make a point but I can’t make heads or tails of it. I think I agree with you, but you’ve left out several words (from what I can tell) so the comment is still unclear.

Perhaps you could try again? Thanks.

    Jeffee

If Barkley was young white and “hot,” Queerty would not nit pick…do you understand now??? Are we sure???

  • Jeffree

@13: Yep, it’s much clearer when there is better punctuation and fewer missing letters/words. Thanks.
