On the eve of his third studio album’s release, Charlie Puth is finally getting honest about all of those thirst traps he posts.
And the reasoning? It won’t surprise you at all…
“I am very horny,” he shares. “All the time”
Well, hello, we appreciate the frankness! This comes from a new GQ Hype profile on the musician that’s as goofy as it is earnest and sentimental.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.

Puth’s upcoming album, Charlie, is said to be his most honest and vulnerable yet, and, in that spirit, he lets it all hang out in the interview, opening up about his thirst, his equally thirsty queer fan base, and more.
For one, he’s adamant that all those teasing, nearly-nude posts are strictly meant to show off the results of all the hard work he’s been putting into the gym. As he tells it, he’s not trying “to antagonize anybody,” and pushes back on the insinuation that the photos could be considered queerbaiting.

In fact, Puth has a lot of love and respect for his gay fans—he even admits to using them as inspiration for his new music. He says he drives through the gay hub of West Hollywood daily, and it’s the songs he hears bumping out of the clubs there that get his creative juices flowing.
“I think LGBTQ+ culture is so ahead of its time, culturally, sonically, musically, everything-ly,” Puth shares, “that when I had a less than perfect song at the studio and I was by myself and I saw everybody having a great time, I literally heard a different song in my head. I rearranged the whole thing, I drove back to the studio, I was so inspired.”

But there’s one gay fan, in particular, that helped get his music career back on track: Sir Elton John.
In the interview, Puth recalls a time in late 2020 when we had the chance to meet the legendary pop star. John said hello, and then pretty swiftly gave the young musician his blunt thoughts on the recent run of uninspiring singles (“I Warned Myself,” “Cheating on You,” and “Mother”):
“I gotta be honest with you,” Puth remembers John saying. “These three songs you’ve put out—they sound nothing like the music that you put together so beautifully on your second album. I think you’re involving too many people in your music.”
Related: Elton John ran into this artist in a restaurant and told him “Your music sucked”
Puth saw that moment as a wake-up call, a reminder to stop trying to be somebody else—i.e. the aloof “bad boy”—and to just allow himself to be the horny goofball that he is.
If Puth’s silly, thirst-trap-filled social media feeds are any indication, he has certainly taken Elton John’s advice to heart. As if we needed any more reasons to be grateful for the Rocket Man.

Really confused by all this… How is it queer baiting, because he posts erotic or provocative images on his own Instagram? Is he saying Hey gays look at me?.. so lost. If you are offended by his “queer baiting” dont go to his page? so weird.
CatholicXXX
He’s not even hot. Or fit
mikhailmaui
exactly. everyone needs to stop with this queer bating nonsense. I love looking at hot straight guys. We as a society are so obsessed with being offended.
abfab
Again with the skanky armpits.
Den
What the hell are you talking about? Do prefer your men shaved like women? That is so sad. Shaved bodies are infantalized.
Bengali
If you don’t like Charlie how about checking out Miss Lindsey Graham.
abfab
Bengali sir,
I’ll leave that to you since she’s on your mind. Now that’s a scary picture!
PQ
Body shaming over hair and using “she” as a pejorative. Gross.
mikhailmaui
Den, there is nothing sad about someone shaving. If you don’t like it, fine. The world does not revolve around your opinion.
Donston
This is partially why these terms become kinda useless over time. People start to apply them for anything. While in the interview he didn’t address “queer baiting” allegations. He addressed his constant thirst-trapping, which some find annoying. That ain’t the same as “baiting”.
Wanting to constantly show off your body online is not inherently “queer”. And thinking that it is reeks of gay panic, and it also reduces gay-ness to just sex. Is he aware that a lot of people looking at and liking those pics and vids are dudes who are into dudes? Of course. But he hasn’t attempted to appear vaguely “gay-ish”, hasn’t attempted to covertly or vaguely suggest he’s into dudes, hasn’t attempted to pretend that he’s in a gay or queer relationship, hasn’t taken on “queer aesthetics”, isn’t outwardly looking for guys who are into dudes to uplift his brand or support him financially, hasn’t tried to be over-the-top “gay friendly” and queer supportive so much so that it comes off contrived, hasn’t suggested that he might possibly be in the gender, sexual, affection, romantic, emotion, commitment spectrum mostly for attention or to add “mystery” to his persona. These are all things that could be considered “baiting”. Nothing he does falls into those categories. He just uses being shirtless for likes. I do think he’s a bit corny and cringe-y while also being a tad cute. But I see no “baiting”.
thisisnotreal
@ Donston, i agree. he doesnt seem like hes baiting us per my definition of the term. but im not gonna lie i sort of side eyed the article when he talked about using our community for “inspiration” in his music. we dont exist to be other peoples inspiration or gay muse, especially when straight people have a history of taking slang and phrases and fashion etc that originates in our community and then they just bastardize it and give it a broad mainstream appeal while forgetting where it came from in the first place. not a fan of him doing that personally.
Donston
I honestly skipped over that at first part, because it seemed like some cringe-y, kiss ass shit. I wouldn’t be surprised if he just made that story up. I guess he said that as a way to make sure folks didn’t accuse him of stealing anything and to show the world he finds “the gays” inspiring.
A percentage of hetero, straight-presenting, hetero-leaning guys do have the tendency to talk about “gays” like they’re observing a different species of human. They also can frequently talk about queerness as if it’s entirely a cultural and sociological thing that’s driven by shallow stuff (sex, clubbing, going to the gym, watching ‘Drag Race’) and has little to nothing to do with sexuality, gender, preferences, romantic, emotion, commitment dimensions, love. Honestly, I’ve realized that many guys who talk like that tend to have queer dimensions/have had degrees of curiosities or fluidity. But that’s another story.
Donston
I also agree that “inspiration” can quickly become bastardization. Especially since a lot of these guys are seeing Harry Styles have chart success and seeing unapologetically queer guys having chart success. It can be a bandwagon and taking on aesthetics thing.
Den
Coming on specifically to gay men so as to harass rob or assault them is queerbaitng. Women like looking at that stuff as well. And nobody ever talks about hetbating.
bachy
Exactly. Accusations of pop queerbaiting is just more bullshit from the circumlocutious mindf*ck that is Gay Twitter.
linedrive
@bachy: circumlocutious. Damn. I had to look that one up and it’s my new favorite word.
bachy
@lineD: if you like that, you should see me say it.
bachy
I think Charlie’s just dreamy….!
I live in LA, Charlie, in case you wanna explore the gay scene a little more….
abfab
Den,
As much as I’d like to explain the minutiae of a great pit, I’ll spare you. From now on, if it makes you happy, I’ll proclaim from on high when I see a non-skanky armpit. Don’t put words in my mouth about shaving.
And what, do you have something against women?
smittoons
I’m actually genuinely curious as to what constitutes a skanky armpit.
Mostlikelytobedownvoted
So wait, when women singers dress all skanky and post selfies on instagram are they lesbianbaiting? Because Im all for singers and actors freeballing and dropping trou. So what? Who cares. Go fish everybody. Free your bait! Stop the nonsense and enjoy the view. Or dont look and shut up.
nitejonboy
We ain’t mad at ya’ Charlie Boy….now if you stopped posting these pics, that would be a different matter..
Joshua333
He’s just so generic and boring, who cares?
bigdandd
C’mon gang… leave the guy alone. So he is overly horny? So what. Not my cup of tea, but I’m sure there are younger gays who love and admire him for their own fantasies or dreams. The number of walking wet dreams are too countless to even imagine, so if someone has the hots for Charlie, more power to them.
Winsocki
Saw the name Charlie Puth … did not read article….. because I have no idea who he is.
Steve9999
And yet you felt the need to make a comment about a person you’ve never heard of in an article you didn’t read? Dude….go get a hobby. (And way to stay uninformed. Bravo…uh, yeah.)
nm4047
but you commented on something you ‘did not’ read. Interesting insight to your life.
AJAnders
I love how Queerty saying a 30 year old guy being constantly horny is this stop the presses moment…as if it’s something nobody would’ve been able to figure out regardless.
Such riveting news, Queerty. I’m embarrassed for you.
kylede
While I dont think he is queerbaiting, i think he is given a pss abpout his orientation becasue he has had a few famous girlfriends…. and if he is “horny all the time” like he says and he lives in one fo the gayest places in creation, i have no DOUBT he has a “dl friend on side” who blow him often enough ( and oif he doesn’t well he should!)
bigdandd
It wouldn’t come as a surprise to me that he hasn’t had a good BJ from our community!
tjack47
He’s very sexy. This queer baiting is bs, except I would consider it queer baiting if he used his attributes to lure in a queer male, whomever, and then beat the ever loving shit out of them and robbed them. That’s queer baiting. Otherwise, some of us will be masturbating. Ya see?
mz.sam
Well go ahead, take him home and spoon feed him with your Metamucil.
mz.sam
This pathetic marshmallow weenie with his forgettable online Jewish cut little squirt fakockta click-bait needs to GO AWAY!
thisisnotreal
could you be any more racist and antisemitic if you tried?
Just.my.opinion
Queer baiting? Thirst trap photos? I have absolutely nothing against Charlie Puth, but I do not find him sexually appealing in any way.
DennisMpls
I’ve always been puzzled when people post on Queerty (or other places) specifically to say that they don’t find the guys in question to be appealing. I just don’t understand the purpose of it.
johnnysimpatico
just mean and attention grabbing and its of our day in this country just say something mean and hurtful and you justify your pathetic existence. for example, CatholicXXX.
Karlis
I’m queer. As far as I’m concerned, Charlie Puth can bait me until the end of time. I will be a very, very happy bait-ee.
