Last August, Hengky Irawan snuck into Aarows, a gay sauna in Sydney, with a liter of acid, a funnel, and a knife. He then proceeded to fill up a lube dispenser with hydrochloric acid, a highly corrosive substance that can cause severe burns to skin, eyes, and the mucous membrane.
Luckily, the lube dispenser was equipped with a sensor that alerted staff it had been tampered with, so nobody was injured. Irawan was arrested and charged with administering poison with the intent to cause injury, distress or pain and malicious damage.

This week, 62-year-old Irawan appeared in the Parramatta Local Court, where his lawyer submitted letters from a general practitioner and a psychologist, both alleging that he suffered from mental illness and that the act was an “irrational, uncharacteristic episode.” His lawyer then asked his client be spared any jail time.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
But prosecutor Nathan Blatch wasn’t so keen on that idea, telling the court it was a “textbook example of motivation for hatred of people.”
“[He] knows it to be a place where sexual intercourse takes place,” Blatch argued.
Irawan’s responded by saying his client didn’t hate gay people. Rather, he was upset because he felt excluded by them during a previous visit to the sauna.

After listening to both sides of the argument, Magistrate Beverley Schurr sentenced Irawan to two years of good behavior bond, which is basically the Australian equivalent to probation.
In explaining the lenient sentence, Schurr said there was no evidence Irawan’s actions actually hurt anyone (though she admitted they could have) then said she sympathized with his feeling excluded by other sauna goers.
“It was directed towards patrons at the nightclub because he felt aggrieved about being kicked out earlier in the year,” she said. “Not about their sexual orientation … angry about being excluded himself.”
She then recommended Irawan accept any treatment by his doctor.
Case closed.

@Baba Booey Fafa Fooey: @joeyty:
I realize it is very, very difficult for you to make decisions or form opinions based on reality, and that you prefer your imagination to anything actual. But really now, given the events and motives laid out in other articles (things clearly anathema to your cartoon image of Muslims), how can you make the claims you do and expect to be taken seriously?
Are all Christians evangelicals?
Are all Hindus rabid nationalists?
Are all gay men queens?
Are all Jews parsimonious?
Are stereotypes the refuge of the scared, stupid, and intellectually lazy? (this is the only question that any sane person can answer ‘yes’)
joeyty
@dwes09: Mateen shooting away in Pulse sure isn’t a cartoon image of Muslims. Neither is hanging gay teen boys. Neither is their wiping out the Charlie Hebdo office. Neither is a Muslim couple shooting people at a Christmas party in San Bernardino. Or…. going on a murder rampage through train stations, restaurants, and hospitals in the city of Mumbai, or taking young children hostage at the Beslan school, or going from classroom to clasroom at the Peshawar school to gun down 100+ children, or taking over the Bataclan Theatre in Paris in order to execute 100 patrons one by one, or fatally driving a truck in Nice over a hundred people, or blowing childrens’ legs off at the Boston Marathon, or killing 32 people at the Brussels airport, or London, or Madrid, or beheading a British soldier right on the street in London or all the other filmed beheadings………none of those are cartoon images but..you probably live somewhere coddled and safe so you pretend what you want. And therefore you can be intellectually lazy and just refuse to think : you just react, automatically assuming every stereotype is automatically wrong.

@dwes09: Is ALL global terrorism carried out by radical Islamists? No… but a LOT of it is. Furthermore, the fact that even moderate circles of Islam share the same beliefs as ISIS should be cause for concern, but lo and behold, the “NOT ALL” trumpet blares again. It’s not an argument anymore… it’s a smokescreen. Islamic terrorism in a league of its own, and pretending like there isn’t a problem is a disservice to the LGBT groups, women, minority religions, and secularists in Islamic countries being oppressed, subjugated, and murdered for not being Muslim or the right kind of Muslim. Looking at France, Sweden, and Germany, how the hell can you not say that there’s a problem or that “Islamophobia” is an irrational fear of Islamic extremism?
Ksb1978
@joeyty: Are all white American men terrorists/mass shooters after one blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City killing more than 100 people including preschoolers. After one planted a bomb during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta killing one and injuring over 100. After two killed 13 students then themselves in Columbine. One shot up a movie theater and killed several people. One Shot up an elementary school and killed a whole class room of 5/6 year olds. One Killed nine people in a church. One shot and killed six people in between picking up Uber clients in Kalamazoo.
joeyty
@Ksb1978: You don’t know how to figure out percentages. I’ll put it to you very simply : Muslims make up a small percentage of Americans. The Pulse massacre was the third time one of them attempted mass murder of gays. See..it’s just like Indians winning the spelling bee. A small percentage doing more than it’s share. Get it ?
joeyty
@Ksb1978: And I’m well up on criminology and know ALL about other spree killing (sometimes called Rampage Murders, now). The second worst massacre in the U.S. (although the U.S. does not lead the world in the worst spree killings) was by a South Korean student (Viginia Tech) but that doesn’t mean I think South Koreans are a growing menace. Again, it has to be figured what percentage of which sub-group of the population is committing the massacres and why. The Pulse massacre was DIRECTLY at the behest of two homophobic Muslim preachers.
Eye of the Beholder
1.) Call it superficial, but ofcourse he was rejected. His problem wasn’t his race/personal religion, but rather his total lack of hotness due to his apparent lifelong disregard for the sensibilities of the gay male community. Even straight guys today know to keep their options open with frequent gym visitations. Just goes to show that you don’t wait until you’re 60 and completely enamored in straight privilege to make gay men care about getting kinky with you out of the blue.
2.) A rationalization for criminal activity does not exclude malicious intention.

@Ksb1978: Are you joking? White isn’t a religion,or an ideology… your analogy is weak and irritating as hell, because it once again attempts to conflate Islam, the religion, with race, in an attempt to give a privileged classification that regressives love to do when trying to shut down conversations. Islam ain’t a race… the end.And of course, the usual going back to the past to bring up some false equivalence to Islam as it is NOW. And besides, as a black man, the last thing I need is people bringing up race, because as the stats show, we have some shit to do in our communities, black people. But I’ve said too much, and now I’m gonna start “coontanging” up on here
Xzamilloh
But then again, being black isn’t a religion either, so fuck your “coon” calls… wrong is wrong.
ChrisK
@Eye of the Beholder: I didn’t read into it that he led any straight life. However, your analogy isn’t that far out. We all know the way the way the gay community is and their fixation on youth. It’s just a simple story of exclusion. Nothing more.
Hermes
@Ksb1978: No, but in the spirit of honesty – the part of the faith that is on the American right can easily produce a lot more, and as it is it produces a steady trickle – and we all need to be aware of that. The saving grace in Christianity is that after the wars around the Reformation, Christians grudgingly admitted that there were different FAITHS within Christianity. Some went crazily extreme, others did not. MOST did not. Islam asserts that it is a monolith – but within that monolith there are groups as divergent as many Christian denominations are from one another. The groups hate each other, they often fight. Children often die for their parents’ faiths, etc.
So the rational trick here is to recognize that RIGHT NOW the majority of terrorists are Muslims; BUT the majority of Muslims are NOT terrorists. That balance is hard for everyone on every side
and
We don’t know what will be true in 2 weeks or 2 months or 10 years. It could easily reverse, although I hope it does not.
Extreme religions are invariably destructive. Islam just has more extreme practitioners right now.
dwes09
@joeyty: You really, really, really have a hard time with reality don’t you. Mateen was neither religious, nor raised as an observant Muslim. He was quite obviously (at least to someone seeing reality rather than mistaking their prejudice for the real world) mentally ill. Just as the large number of Christians who attack and/or kill gay people, black people and their own families stating they are motivated by God. Were Muslims intrinsically dangerous or by nature set on world domination ], as the fear driven people such as you claim, the wold would already be under Muslim control! THE LARGEST MUSLIM NATIONS ARE NOT EVEN UNDER RELIGIOUS LAW. Get real. What you are doing is no different from the demonization of the Japanese in WW II, or the Jews by so many folks throughout history (and probably by you in private if your sad references to “jew york” are any indication. I know that for intellectually weak any kind of physical or cultural difference is scary, and i extend my pity. But were you to actually exercise your intellectual capacity, you might be able to get over that. You are to cultural/religious minorities, as Brian is to women (so saddled with fears and neuroses that you are unable to make logical decisions regarding them).
dwes09
@Xzamilloh: ” the fact that even moderate circles of Islam share the same beliefs as ISIS should be cause for concern, but lo and behold, the “NOT ALL” trumpet blares again.”
ALL Christians share the same core beliefs as the Klan, and all other faith based white supremist and alt-right groups. But nobody claims it makes all Christians dangerous. All Japanese were imprisoned in the US because they shared the same racial characteristics as a foreiogn fascist government. Note that WHITE Germans were not so treated although arguably posed a greater threat. I suspect that after the threat of radical jihadists fades we will see (though you and Joeyty and mobro and brian and the other radical right gay folks won’t, as regressives cling to fear and distaste) how repellent the demonization of all of Islam was.
” how the hell can you not say that there’s a problem or that “Islamophobia” is an irrational fear of Islamic extremism?”
In the same way that progressives through the modern era have fought against the characterization of the “nigra” as oversexed, stupid, instinct driven and only 4/5ths human so to do progressives today fight against the characterization of a huge ethnic/religious group characterized as primitive and dangerous based on the actions of very few, MOST OF WHICH ARE DIRECTED AGAINST OTHER MUSLIMS. You and your buddies here are not advising we be caustious of “Islamist extremism”, you are screaming about how all of Islam is a danger. As a Jew, who grew up with (and still sees) both subtle and direct anti-semitism, I find that view repellent and indicative of intellectual weakness.
dwes09
@joeyty: “you just react, automatically assuming every stereotype is automatically wrong.”
By definition, all stereotypes are wrong. You really demonstrate your intellectual weakness and fear driven nature at every turn. Stereotypes take the exaggerated visible characteristics of a few within a group (regardless of their genesis or meaning) and extrapolate them to the group as a whole. Are we all limp-wristed, cologne soaked lispers? Do all black men have big dicks and “rhythm”? Are all Jews hook nosed, dark and stingy? Are even a majority (or large minority@joeyty: that way? Well, perhaps in your imaginary world they are.
” The second worst massacre in the U.S. (although the U.S. does not lead the world in the worst spree killings) was by a South Korean student (Viginia Tech) but that doesn’t mean I think South Koreans are a growing menace.”
Were he a Muslim South Korean, you might well, judging from your behavior here.
” The Pulse massacre was DIRECTLY at the behest of two homophobic Muslim preachers.”
The Pulse massacre was committed by an Americanized, hardly religious man. A rational examination has to do with what caused him to do this, not to ignore reality and assume it was some intrinsic islamic nature. When Christians go nuts and commit crimes like this, nobody takes their claims of motivation seriously. When otherwise assimilated Muslims do it, the weak minded assume they were motivated entirely by faith. The world and many actions are not as simple as your fear driven outlook requires it to be.
Heywood Jablowme
@Hermes: “So the rational trick here is to recognize that RIGHT NOW the majority of terrorists are Muslims…”
You have hit on something pertinent there. Not THAT long ago, most terrorists were motivated by Marxist or pseudo-Marxist beliefs, or right-wing beliefs especially in Europe. That was what attracted disgruntled loners and losers back then. Nowadays it’s Islam, or a cartoon (no pun intended) version of Islam, that tends to attract disgruntled loners and losers, and they don’t always have a nominally Muslim background. One of the San Bernardino plotters was a Mexican-American convert to Islam.
joeyty
@dwes09: “The Pulse massacre was committed by an Americanized, hardly religious man” Nope. It was directly as the result of two Imams preaching homophobia , the ones Mateen was following, that caused it. You can pretend otherwise all you want but…… Did you hear the recently released 9-11 calls from the massacre ? “I am an Islamic soldier!” and so much more.
joeyty
@dwes09: “The world and many actions are not as simple as your fear driven outlook requires it to be.” Then you might as well just start crossing the street without looking both ways first, since you think fear-driven outlooks don’t serve us well.
joeyty
@dwes09: “Are we all limp-wristed, cologne soaked lispers?” Queerty says gays are.
joeyty
@dwes09: The problem with you, dwes, is that you sound like your entire knowledge-gathering was in a classroom and being dictated to by some bitter professor. My conclusions are from knowing people, from Norman Rockwell Americana types to the most “exotic” foreigners. I think I’ll trust my own conclusions about people and stereotypes over your fantasy-driven academic types.
joeyty
@dwes09: “As a Jew, who grew up with (and still sees) both subtle and direct anti-semitism, I find that view repellent and indicative of intellectual weakness.” Phillip Roth would have a field day mocking you.
joeyty
@dwes09: “As a Jew, who grew up with (and still sees) both subtle and direct anti-semitism, I find that view repellent and indicative of intellectual weakness.” And if Jews were going into art galleries that include drawings of Mohammad and trying to kill everyone (like what happened in Texas and Paris) instead of coming up with everything from Superman comics to the Salk vaccine, I’d be anti-Semitic too. But that’s not the reality.
joeyty
Next dwes will be saying Indians don’t always win the National Spelling Bee.
Xzamilloh
@dwes09: You know what I find indicative of intellectual weakness? The all too eagerness of you and your small minded brethren to categorize any contrarian thought as “other.” I think you will find that joeyty, Alistar, Brian, and the like will attest that I am indeed a “lefty” and do not have a right wing mentality… not that it would even matter because it wouldn’t make what I or anything joey said any less right or wrong. Liberals like me are springing up more and more because regressives like you are sacrificing liberal principles and basic beliefs that we as liberals should have for “multiculturalism”… that instead of addressing the many way Islamic countries fall short in protecting it’s LGBT citizens, the fact that women are still regarded as second class citizens in many Islamic countries, the countless terrorist attacks, the Cologne, Germany sexual assault during New Years. And you can’t stop with the “not all” BS narrative.
The Klan is nothing… the Klan means nothing… it is a group that has no power in America, does not kill anyone, and Christians by far and large denounce them, and if someone is discovered to be in cahoots with them, their involvement isn’t explained away as “Christianophobia.” Furthermore, I’m an atheist… I can and have trashed Christianity as being one of the ignorant religions out there and contend that the more people attempt to make Christianity more palatable for the new centuries, the less like Christianity it becomes… and that’s a good thing.
And FYI, it is my experience that “progressives” can be some of the most passive aggressive r@cists I have ever come across, because I have to be the right kind of black and I have to agree that I’m oppressed and that I need help not being killed by the po po. So thank you, progressives, for always reminding me that I am less than you because of the color of my skin. That
