Yes, I guess it could be said that he gave up his privacy by putting the goods out there on Rentboy, but does it really advance anything to exploit him further? I agree with Cam… he has been fairly forthcoming in confirming aspects of the story that we’d never get from Rekers’ camp, and has made it so there is little grey area left that could be used to cast doubt on what actually happened. Thank you both for your gracious and supportive comments. I totally agree with both of you. The LGBT community in Florida is currently battling in the courts for the right to adopt and this young man’s courageous disclosure has already proven to be a big setback for our foes. Kudos to him!
This was the lead story on NBC’s local affiliate’s 11:00 AM local version of “The Today Show” and all four of the presenters commented on Rekers’ hypocrisy, avarice, disgusting behavior, etc., with at least one presenter suggesting that his comments/expert testimony needs to be reavaluated. Hopefully said comments will have some effect on those viewers who are undecided on the issue of gay adoption and lgbt equality and begin to view opponents of the same with a more discerning eye. FYI, one of the presenters thought that the “boy” in rentboy.com meant that all of the escorts were underage boys.
To all of those who posted demeaning, insipid, judgmental and snotty comments, this brave young man has done more to advance gay adoption in Florida than any of you presumably have. Give the kid a break.

I have no idea what motivated him but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was offered hush money. Perhaps not. Whatever his motivations are, it resulted in another blow against the opponents of our community. That’s a good thing.
The fact that he chose to work as an escort is his choice and far be it for me or you to judge the same. As long as he’s not killing people,stealing from them, abusing them, I don’t care. Prostitution obviously serves a purpose since it exists. I wouldn’t necessarily suggest that anyone become an escort but that’s their choice, not yours or mine.

@Hilarious: I do know my state and it’s not as black and white as you appear to think it is. Miami-Dade County symbolizes the American Dream. It is a true melting pot. Latinos have economic, political and social clout. The same trend is becoming a reality in Broward and Palm Counties and on the West Coast. Various ethnic groups have mingled and mixed to combine a multicultural community. I don’t think that’s the case in many other states. Florida is not the only state that supports enclaves of political and religious bigots. If we achieve gay adoption, and for that matter lgnt equality, in the near future, it will be through the courts because it is doubtful that a majority of the state’s citizens would support the same. A similar scenario exists in many states. In addition to a conservative Hispanic running for the Senate, the leading Democratic candidate is an African American. Our former Senator was Hispanic and our horrendous former governer was married to a Mexican. Not lily white candidates. Of course I would prefer rapid change but hopefully Florida is on the right path. Obviously we have a long way to go. At least we haven’t endorsed legislation promoting racial and ethnic profiling.

I’d agree that his name should not have been publicized, nor his pictures with friends on social web sites, who might not have known what his current source of income is (his friends deserve their privacy). At least, QUEERTY could have cropped them or fuzzed out faces of third parties, as these were personal pictures of no public interest.
Keep in mind too that he is 20 years old. You can legitimately take a dim view of his line of work, but given his age, it is really unacceptable to create a “web trail” that can follow him for life. You don’t learn, particular if you are going to do something really significant, without making mistakes, and if you make the consequences for making mistakes unacceptably high, you will reduce the rate of human progress to zero.
At one point, years ago, I saw some examples of newspaper items in a German textbook . If someone, not a prominent politician, was in some mishap (not someone guilty of a crime, but something like an accident or embarrassing situation), they would normally give the person’s first name and last initial. While perhaps typical of a different culture in a different era, it is an example worth emulating today – show a little respect for the average person’s privacy, and don’t define a “public figure” as being synonymous with any convenient target for the press to go after for crass economic reason.

I think a reasonable question is whether he *should* be a public person. He’s not a celebrity (very successful actor, etc., who people think of as a role model of some sort), he is not a corporate figure who has a significant influence on the economy, and he is not a politician or other public figure who has a significant influence on public policy. Rekers obviously qualifies, but the people he hires for menial tasks, including ‘servicing’ certain portions of his anatomy if he is so inclined, do not.
Basically, I see no reason to publicize “Lucien’s” real name any more than the name of Rekers’ maid (if he has one).

Any time there is bigotry against a group you will find examples of this. Thousands of African Americans crossed a line to pass as white, Jews in Europe pretended to be Christians, and when people did cross over they did not draw attention to themselves by marching for rights. The African American who was working in the Wall Street Firm because he was thought to be white didn’t go around the company agitating for it to change it’s hiring practices. If you knew anything about history you would know this. this isn’t a movement failure, this is a response to bigotry. The fact that people outside the gay community do not know the name of everybody working within the movement do not change the fact that Gay Marriage is now legal in several states, ENDA is being voted on in Congress, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is in the process of being replealed. That does not happen without forces pushing for it. The fact that you do now know who they are is irrelevent. Those people are not there for you.

Your questions have all been answered, the way that this is obvious is that you will not be specific. You say “You have not addressed some of my other points.” Yet you do not point out which points those are.
