Teenage YouTube Star Hailed As The “New Bieber” Drops Debut Single

troye-sivan-dc73f1e5-d123-4047-a905-cf12bd1b2639Social media sensation Troye Sivan, the twink who will take over as Gay Tumblr’s leader when Tyler Oakley turns 30, has released the video for his very first single, “Happy Little Pill”.

The 19-year-old Australian’s claim to fame was a starring role as young Wolverine in X-Men Origins, but he became a YouTube sensation in his teens by using his channel to talk pop culture, promote activism and navigate his own coming out.

“Happy Little Pill” is the first single from his debut EP, TRXYE. It’s a slow and upbeat electro-pop ballad that cements his status as a perfect Lorde-meets-Zedd hybrid (even though everyone is calling him the “new Bieber.”)

To celebrate the release of the video, Sivan spoke to fans on Tumblr in his native Millennial tongue:

Hiiiiiii guys!!
i’m soooo excited to be able to share with you the Happy Little Pill music videooooo! hope you punks like it and share it with your mates and make gifs of the radical owl. Making this video perfectly represent the song and it’s message was super important to me, and i hope you guys connect with it as much as i do. Also there is a hot boy in it playing soccer. enjoy!!

Not sure what’s up with the heterosexual storyline, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t impressed by this kid’s debut.

Noooope. Can’t do it. Officially old. Have fun kids, but get the hell off my lawn.

“everyone is calling him the “new Bieber”

So being a universally talent less and hated duchbag is considered a good thing?

Tired of these “manufactured pop stars” with their cute faces which is apparently all one needs. Whatever happened to real music?

  • crowebobby

I love Troye and love the song, but I don’t get the “Bieber” comparison; their music, personalities, career development, places they occupy in the music/entertainment arena are so completely different. But whatever helps Troye, I’m all for it.

  • Stache99

@crowebobby: The music is different but I think their mostly referring to age and looks and the fast m?a?n?u?f?a?c?t?u?r?e?d? career developed pop star meant to appeal to young girls and some gay men mostly.

    Shockingly Bitter! ;)

  • SteveDenver

I hope he’s the NEW Bieber, the old one is haggered and a pest.
Unfortunately his music may be too edgy and thought-provoking for Bieber’s brain-dead following.

    My happy little pill
    Take me away
    Dry my eyes
    Bring color to my skies
    My sweet little pill
    Take my hunger
    Light within, numb my skin

I think this is pretty impressive. He or someone he knows must have been suffering from addiction (but I doubt it’s him, he’s way too fresh-faced) or something like that, and the only escape was indulging in drugs and alcohol. At least that’s how it sounds to me! This song sounds kinda personal.

I don’t get the Bieber comparission, this guy has way better voice, but i suppose all this new internet singers like him or Shawn Mendes will be compared with Bieber (at least at the beginning).
Hopefully none of them will become the mess Bieber is right now, and with a little luck they will be less annoying too.
At least they are using their popularity for something positive instead of shouting homophobic slurs in videos like that Vine little brat

  • Stache99

@Dxley: The song is clearly written by someone else. Somehow I don’t exactly buy this teenager having experience with drugs. He needs to leave those kind of songs to the big boys. I agree that it’s good though and he has a good voice. Also seems to be his claim to fame song.

  • ait10101

@Stache99: He was famous as a movie lead long before this video.

    • Stache99

Oh wait I forgot. They don’t tell unless they’re washed up an need the $ ;)

  • Stache99

@ait10101: Yeah, I see that he started out with the 2009 Xmen movie.

I wonder if he has any Brian Singer stories to tell since he’s clearly Singers type and it’s not uncommon for Singers tricks to end up in his movies.

  • xzall

@ait10101: Here’s what he wrote about the song : “I wrote this song during a bit of a rough time for someone super close to me, and for myself, and it still means as much to me as the day i wrote it, and i’m still as in love with it as the day i wrote it (which is rare for me!!).” Sounds like it’s a personal song for him.

I was so excited about this video! I thought the song was sexy and smooth-and he’s an adorable little guy. But frankly I’m disheartened or disappointed, I don’t know how to explain it. I mean, he’s gay, right? I was expecting maybe a scene between him and his own “little pill”, or at least the reality of his sexual orientation being a key focal point in his work. Sure every once in a while a heterosexual will feature some gays in some generic “love is love” video, but other than that it’s a hetero-normative establishment. It’s just comical because so many of these younger gay men on YouTube and twitter have that whole “social justice/privilege” thing going on. They’ll remind you Katniss was supposed to be black or that no gay person has won an award of some kind-only to turn around and stick to the status-quo when they finally reach a point where they can change the game. YouTube can be great in giving outsiders a chance to be themselves, it’s a shame to see him waste it. Makes me realize how big a deal Steve Grand was/is-he had the balls to put both his sexual orientation and desires right in front of you… and he’s not the effeminate twink from California. Funny too how all the gays on YouTube and twitter ignored him but are praising troye. Huh.

  • tardis

    Isn’t this Tyler Oakley’s boyfriend?

  • asby

I am pretty sure Tyler Oakley will never admit to being close to 30…….He will still be holding on too that twin thing forever

  • Ogre Magi

    DAMN he is cute

    • Stache99

@Ogre Magi: I think he’s cute too but just not in a sexual way. More like how you feel about someone’s kids.

  • Cagnazzo82

Yay, more solemn dead music with cheap computer melody made in fruity loops. Just what we needed more of on youtube.
