Waterloo Road, the British drama about youngsters at a day school that’s now in its sixth season, and which last night took home Best Drama at the Inside Soap Awards, last week featured a smooch between lads Josh (gay) and Finn (straight–confused?). It was the talk of Twitter! Which means I must post about it! And while I don’t really know what’s going on in this show (and I’m sure you’re about to school me in it), I do understand that Josh’s coming out process is quite the storyline.

Lawrence
just so everyone knows…the Josh actor is 19…why in the fuck is he playing a Tween?
Smartypants
Well, it makes him several years closer to age appropriate than almost any of the actors on GLEE…
Larence
sorry, Finn – either way…
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
At least the casting directors ova there get actors that look the age they are portraying………..Over here we get high school students with receding hairlines and bald spots….. :p

Aren’t tweens from nine to twelve years old? And they’re called tweens because they’re between early childhood and teenage? These kids are obviously high-school age, around 16 or 17, at the very least 15. The boys are really cute, especially Finn. I’d have a crush on him too, if I were Josh. This looks like an interesting show. I’ll have to start watching it on the ‘net.

this is like degrassi only 1000 times better and more real. Does American have a show like this? Why is it BBC only has good writing/acting/ production of these types of shows.
Baxter
@scott ny’er: The only problem with British shows is that they have absolutely terrible production values. They all look like they were shot in someone’s basement with a camcorder.
Hannah
@Baxter: True, but good acting and a believable storyline is worth it. Great lighting is meaningless if the story is still crap.
Steve
This is the first time I have seen this show. It
started out very realistically, showing Josh as the
fearful closet case who lashes out to distract attention
from himself. Finn’s reaction and the leaking of the
news via IM is also very realistic. But then it seems
that Finn comes around almost magically at the end of
the second vid. In one episode, he goes from being
a basher and seething homophobe to a laid back guy who has no problem having physical contact with the dude who just tried to kiss him. Totally unrealistic. It’s like there were
two different writers creating this episode.

@scott ny’er: I wish BBC America would have a greater choice of true british programming instead of foisting 18 yr old repeats of Star Trek The Next Generation on us. I’d like to see more shows like Waterloo Road to get a greater understanding of british popular culture.
@Steve: Kids today in 2010 are much more gay savvy than what they were 20 yrs ago, so I could see a guy if he wasn’t homophobic getting over it quicker than kids used to.
