Tacky or Cute? Old Navy Sells Pride T-Shirts for It Gets Better

Okay, fashion experts: what are your thoughts on Old Navy’s new pride shirts? Thumbs up or thumbs down? The line debuts Monday, and ten percent of proceeds benefit It Gets Better. The whole giving-back-to-charity angle makes it hard to be too critical, unless you actually like being critical of It Gets Better, and there are plenty who do. Perhaps you would even like to leave a few words to that effect in the comments! And if you’re not a fan of IGB, perhaps Kristen Bell’s seal of approval is enough to sway your opinion. Old Navy’s PR folks sent along a photograph of the former Veronica Mars wearing a v-neck version of the rainbow tee. She’s hot on the case … OF FASHION. Also a fan of the tee, according to Old Navy: Adam Lambert. Oh yeah, that guy! So, what do you think? Better, worse, or the same as American Apparel’s “Legalize Gay” or the weird scrawl from Marc Jacobs? Check out all four of the new Pride tees in hi-res!

Lesbians in the suburbs need something trendy to wear to the PTA meetings.

I found AA’s campaign too hipster for my tastes, it made me suspicious, even though I sort of thought it was cool. Old Navy’s only makes me suspicious in that it’s mainstream, and doesn’t penetrate to deeper issues. I think exposure is great, and overall a huge positive.

  • TMikel

    Why only 10%?

  • mrbill

support in the main stream good just waiting for the boycott from some wing nut anti-gay group

  • Gem

Isn’t everything at Old Navy tacky?

  • Dallas David

@Gem: No idea — never been there.

Don’t need anything but Levi 501’s.

  • EVAN

    TACKY

  • Mary S

Old Navy, one of the only companies to EVER have the balls to do a line of Pride T’s… and what do we do is BITCH. Old Navy has a lot of right wing customers… They stuck their neck out for us… plus they will give 10%… and we BITCH???????

Bitch at Macy’s JCP, Khol’s AEO, A&F etc… for NOT having balls to show support… call.. indeed go to, Old Navy thank them for their support and buy one, or two

@JAW: I agree with you! Thus, I am going to buy a few! Haters are going to hate… and haters are in the hated minority as well. Pity. Oh well. Not everyone is bitter! Thank you for posting! 🙂

Good for Old Navy! Remember they have been gay friendly even when the actual Navy wasn’t!

  • Stiggidy7

  • Andrea

    @JAW:

Exactly! I don’t typically wear rainbow-themed clothing, but I’m buying one of these.

  • SoCalGal73

AWESOMENESS!!! My brother’s gay so I’m snatching up the grey and white one the second they go on sale!!! If you think it’s tacky, don’t buy it! Period! End of story! Buh-bye!

  • Kit Door

WOW! Old Navy will accept our money?! Oh, thank you, Old Navy, thank you so much for letting us profit you!

    *sigh*

  • Kara

Thanks for letting us profit you? The shirts are less than 15 bucks. Wahh.

  • Mel Green

Turns out the shirts are being sold at only a tiny minority of Old Navy stores — a few big cities get them, most other places don’t. About those Old Navy “Pride” t-shirts at Bent Alaska.

  • samthor

while I admit these particular designs do not tickle my fancy, I think it’s kind of cool Old navy is willing to put out a line of shirts. It’s progress….

  • Jeffree

That sound you here is the clock ticking down until some religious group notices the shirts & gets their sheeple to boycott or even protest!

I look forward to the day when OldNavy & other stores can have this merch. in *all* their stores.

  • Hallie Gammon

    A) I think the shirts are cute. I’d wear one, if only I could get it from my local Old Navy.

    B) The shirts are only being offered in less than 3% of Old Navy’s locations, and not at all online. I think this sends completely the wrong message: pride and equality are only marketable in a tiny number of locations in the U.S., most of them big cities or blue states.

To thank Old Navy for their gesture, but let them know that the LGBT community and their allies expect better from them, I’ve created a Change.org petition targeting the CEO of Gap Inc. (ON’s parent company) and the ON customer service department: http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-old-navy-support-pride-in-all-50-states If you have a moment, please sign and share with your friends. Thanks!

Old Navy really SUCKS—I never shop there cause they only care about their profits–And the stores have a weird stench when you walk in—-GARBAGE CRAP…
