The 10 Gayest Moments in Hip-Hop History

Despite a new generation of rappers making excuses for back-handed homophobic remarks in hip-hop (Nicki Minaj called us softies; while Tyler, the Creator got around to ordering our caskets), there’s no denying that the genre has had its moments of homoeroticism more obvious that DMX telling us to “suck his dick” in 1999’s “Party Up (in Here).” In April, DJ Mister Cee, the man responsible for kickstarting Notorious B.I.G.’s career by producing the late rapper’s first album, was arrested for public lewdness–getting a blowjob from another man inside a vehicle, to be precise. The hip-hop world jumped up in his defense (and the defense of fellatio-loving fellas everywhere) and even homo-questionable 50 Cent had something nice to say (kind of). Just weeks later, Berkeley rapper Lil B made headlines at Coachella after declaring that his new album was going to be titled I’m Gay, even though he is not gay, despite Tweeting that he was going to fuck Kanye West in the ass (his words, not ours). GLAAD thinks this might be just some big marketing gimmick, one that involves death threats. All we need now is for Trey Songz to release another shirtless music video, and 2011 will be pants-down the gayest year in hip-hop history. Even gayer than when…
Former MTV producer, Terrance Dean, released his memoirHiding in Hip Hop: On the Down Low in the Entertainment Industry, outing several prominent players in the black community as closeted homosexuals. Straying away from Rap 101, Dean refused to namedrop but blogs speculated that the likes of Diddy and Jay-Z were hiding in between the lines.
The ever-stylish Fonzworth Bentley, Diddy’s former assistant and rumored lover, kicked off two contestants off his reality show for using the word, “faggot” after some tongue-wagging. Bentley’s From G’s to Gents was all about turning gansta’s into gentlemen, and it started with a well-deserved vocabulary lesson.
Openly gay singer Rufus Wainwright confessed his longtime crush on 50 Cent in an interview with Details magazine. “I think he’s just the sexiest, and a brilliant writer. And I know he’s gay,” Rufus said. How did he come to that conclusion? “That cute little voice of his. It’s okay, 50 Cent. Feel free to call me anytime. My boyfriend and I are experts. You can come over for dinner. And maybe dessert.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoIaDnmJb5Q And as if that comment from Rufus didn’t get the world to start questioning, 50 Cent then put on a wig and started trying to convince people he was going to launch a line of beauty products for men.
Lil Wayne man-smooched fellow rapper Birdman.
Akon signed Jeffree Star and billed him the next Lady Gaga – which means, Jeffree will have a stupendous first album that will skyrocket him to intergalactic fame only to come back with a mess of a sophomore album that promises to deliver us from all evil. Then completely fails on that promise.

And who could forget Eminem bringing out Elton John onstage at the Grammy’s? The duo held hands and bowed down together. Eminem was later quoted as not knowing that Elton was, in fact, a homosexual. Which is not that hard to believe since Eminem doesn’t even know that he is a homosexual

    One of the most homosexual moments in Hip Hop is any moment following the words.

    And now, Give it up for Queen Latifa!!!

  • RosieB

    Buh? Eminem really had no idea Elton John was gay?? He’s one of the most famous queer celebs!

    That duet was actually the one thing that made me respect/interested in Em…but finding out there was no intentional whatever behind it…that’s pretty much going out the window. :-/

  • Kev

    @Cam: Come on, if you’re going to attempt humor at least spell the womans name correctly “Latifah.” This article is ridiculous. THESE are your examples of “Gayest Moments in Hip-Ho” ??? Guess that’s what I get for keepin this site as part of my google reader.

  • Kev

    @Kev: *Hip-Hop

    Again, Odd Future never “got around to ordering our caskets” way to put a Fox News spin on it. As per my previous post, there are openly gay members of Odd Future (Tyler the Creators crew) and they say that shit because they are making a point. Same reason they say FUCK CHURCH AND GOD 666. I mean they even regularly contribute and perform with Lil B, who’s new album is entitled “I’m Gay”.

  • Marcus

    @Kev:

    I agree, there are so many gayer examples.

    Come on, Queerty.

  • Dluxe1

    It’s clear that a white person wrote this, because like Maxwell, Usher, and R.Kelly before him, Trey Songz is referred to as a “rapper”, when there isn’t a stitch of rhyming or iambic pentameter to be found anywhere near his songs. *eye roll*

    “A lot of people take stuff too seriously. So some of the time it’s actually for them, my subconscious doing it on purpose, just to piss them off. I want people to take that stuff too seriously, especially shit like that. But, just, whatever. I try to preach be yourself and do what you want. It’s not our fault if they’re fucking dumb enough to believe this shit … I just turned 20. I’m just living life and having as much fun as I can. I don’t think about shit like that.

    I’m not homophobic. I just think faggot hits and hurts people. It hits. And gay just means you’re stupid. I don’t know, we don’t think about it, we’re just kids. We don’t think about that shit. But I don’t hate gay people. I don’t want anyone to think I’m homophobic. ([His friend] Jasper walks into the room) But he’s a fucking faggot!”

    Yeah, he’s really calling for our fucking coffins.

    Maybe I should quote the article where he’s talking about how he fully supports gay marriage? Let’s not forget he also calls himself a faggot a LOT. If he was really a gay hating homophobe I really doubt he would refer to himself being a faggot, or wearing womens underwear. Or crossdressing on the covers of magazines.

    @Kev:

    So basically you are just determined to be sour. Is she straight? She isn’t? Oh, ok, then never mind. As for spelling her name correctly, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I had typed out “Dana Andrews” incorrectly. Oh thats right, I didn’t, I mistyped her made up stage name.

  • RJ

    @ Cam

    Her real name is actually Dana Owens, not Andrews.

    My favorite moment will be when it totally fades away. Hip-Hop is about as relevant as banjo or polka music. Its hateful roots in militant rap music have marginalized an entire generations of African Americans. Cringe worthy yelling or talking over melodies written by others is hardly a talent. Marvin Gay, Stevie Wonder, Barry White that is talent.

  • Jesse

    @ggreen: Yikes, that comment didn’t seem make you seem ignorant at all. I doubt it’ll fade anytime soon. Rap has been out since the 70’s… and in this current time… it is only getting more commercial. Unlike Polka, or Bluegrass (banjo), like you’ve mentioned. Then throwing Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and Stevie Wonder as the only black artists that you may know a few songs by, was really the icing on the cake. You should educate yourself, hip hop has influenced all sorts of music, like rock, pop, even country artists are now trying to “flow” in their songs, or have rappers in their music or even have their music written by rappers. Maybe your subburbian view of hip hop and rap culture is stuck in the 1990’s… I don’t know. The ignorance made you come off not only as old and dumb… but kind of racist.

  • DMWN

    @ggreen: Hey ggreen, I got an idea…why not hold you breath until it happens? Then when you suffocate to death, you won’t have to deal with Hip Hop anymore! Sound good?

  • Jacob

    Why didn’t Sacha baron Cohen ass landing on eminems face at the mtv awards aint make the list or lil B titling his album I Am Gay. Diddy and all his zesty photos and rumors. You guys really coulda chosen better

  • Willy

    Tyler didn’t “order” anyone’s Casket, that was Earl… I’m sure that’s not the point though.
