Nonbinary actor Jesse James Keitel has landed a leading role in the new reboot version of Queer as Folk, set to debut next year on Peacock.
Deadline reports that Keitel–who uses both “she” and “they” pronouns–will step into the role of a transgender party girl struggling to get her life in order.
Keitel shared the news with fans on Instagram. “I’m still so gagged — Honored, thrilled, and in genuine disbelief to be joining this iconic show. Let’s make some magic, y’all,” she posted.

The news also comes as Keitel announced a return to the ABC drama Big Sky for a second season. The new season will see her upgraded to series regular.
Further details remain mum on the new incarnation of Queer as Folk, though Peacock has announced Stephen Dunn will create the show, which will be set in New Orleans and follow a group of friends following a tragedy. Special creator Ryan O’Connell also confirmed to Queerty that he has landed a writing job on the show.
Both the original British version of Queer as Folk, created by Russell T. Davies, and its American adaptation won wide praise for their groundbreaking depictions of LGBTQ life. The American version, which aired on Showtime, ran for five seasons.

I don’t know how well it will do today. Back then they were ground breaking and new. Then again it could be a generational thing. The millennials and Gen Z want their own Queer as folk now.
It’s probably going to get bitched about non stop though. Queer as folk had the advantage of being around before social media. I always thought Looking was a natural sequel to Queer as Folk but was doomed due to the constant onllne bitchers.

“Looking” was boring and pretentious. A more deserving passing of the crown from QAF was the sadly underseen “Eastsiders”. Netflix eventually picked it up, but if it had HBO’s marketing behind it, it would have been the next QAF.

Gay films were niche films, still are. The audience is LGBT people, which is a minority of people. Rarely do they cross over into wider popularity, and only have done so when the leads are famous actors, usually straight. I’m not sure how many people fall into the demographic to want to watch a show about such a niche group when there are so many other choices for entertainment. Whether they should watch it isn’t relevant to the question of its commercial success. I’ll give it a go, but if it is all woke preachy preachy, I’m sure I will tire of it quickly. There is a way to do this…but it tricky.

I wish the series would feature the original cast, but do need more trans people on the show. I know they’re not trans, but this is a start.

They’re all too old for it now. The series is about a group of twenty something’s and the the drama that surrounds them at that age.
They could bring them back for a limited series or a movie though. I’d sure watch it.

We’ll back from the Afghanistan Op-ed. I won’t be watching and I suspect most gay men will pass without some a sexy male as a lead. When you remake a show like Will and Grace, The Conners, etc. We expect a continuation but leads change and others disappear and just like when John Boy was replaced in the Waltons or Dick York on Bewitched it essentialy becomes a loser but you do what you think best.

Eastsiders? The only good thing on that series is Willam. The two leads are incredibly unlikable. Looking was just awful overall. Not looking forward to this reboot either if this person is the lead.
