Meet Jorik Hendrickx. He’s currently representing Belgium in the men’s figure skating competition at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. He’s also gay.
The 25-year-old, brown-eyed Belgian has been out to his friends and family for the past four years. But it wasn’t until recently that he started talking about it publicly.
“I remember avoiding questions about the gay rights in Russia,” he tells Outsports. “Not because I was embarrassed, I was just not ready. Now I’m totally fine and happy with the person I am right now.”
Hendrickx finished 16th in the men’s figure skating of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games.

At a press conference in Pyeonchang earlier this week, Hendrickx said he hopes by coming out he will inspire other LGBTQ athletes and younger generations to do the same.
“There is no difference in being a gay or straight athlete,” he said. “Sexual orientation is irrelevant. I think it shouldn’t matter what your sexual orientation is because sport should be about the performances and results.”
“My sexual orientation doesn’t make me more special than any other Olympian. We are one big happy family.”

I live in NYC, and even in liberal New York, you don’t prance around in a public park wearing that skimpy bikini. But kudos to him for having the confidence to do so. I wonder if he currently lives in New York.

What!?! What NYC do you live in? I don’t think I’ve ever been to Central Park in the summer without seeing a giggle of gays (my friends and I included) wearing something like this or skimpier.
