First family problems

Miserable Melania on being First Lady: “It’s not my thing.”

This just in: An damning new article claims Melania Trump never wanted to be First Lady of the United States of America.

Shocked? Yeah, us neither.

Vanity Fair reports:

[Melania] knew her husband wanted to run for president. And she knew that, if he didn’t, he was likely to be knocking around their gilded triplex in Trump Tower, muttering about how he should have done so. “She said, ‘It’s not my thing. It’s Donald’s thing,’ ” according to Stone. “And I think she understood he was going to be unhappy if he didn’t run.”

So he ran. And he won! And suddenly Melania found herself thrust into a role for which she never signed up:

There may never have been a First Lady less prepared for or suited to the role. “This isn’t something she wanted and it isn’t something he ever thought he’d win,” one longtime friend of the Trumps’ told me. “She didn’t want this come hell or high water. I don’t think she thought it was going to happen.”

Vanity Fair points out all the things about Melania that make her an “unusual” First Lady, including the fact that she is the only FLOTUS in history with naked pictures on the internet and that she didn’t move into the White House until five months after her husband’s inauguration.

She also employs half the number of staff as either Michelle Obama or Laura Bush did, in large part because she just doesn’t need them… because she doesn’t do anything. Most of her days are spent “very much alone.”

According to one insider, during the transition, her staff  “sat around waiting for the phone to ring.”

“We really had very little to do,” the insider says.

Sources tell Vanity Fair that, nearly a year in, Melania is finally “warming” up to her role, though there is still a lot she hates about it, including the public scrutiny, the bad press, and her secret service detail:

Melania has also confided to the longtime family friend that she is unnerved by the constant Secret Service detail. She was accustomed to “drivers and security, but now you have the Secret Service outside your door,” the friend told me.

In a statement released last month, Melania’s press secretary said:

Mrs. Trump has made the White House a home for Barron and the President. She loves living in Washington, D.C., and is honored by her role as First Lady of the United States.
