PHOTOS: NYC Comics Shop Celebrates Gay X-Men Wedding With A Real-World One

For gay comic-book fans, Wednesday was more important than Pride Sunday will be. After all, Pride comes every year—how many times do gay super-heroes get married? To celebrate the release of Astonishing X-Men #51, when gay speedster Northstar married his longtime boyfriend, Midtown Comics in New York’s Financial District hosted real weddings for two gay-male couples, Scott Everhart and Jason Welker and Khris Wilson and Chris Orme. The men tied the knot beneath a banner showing Northstar and Kyle doing the same, GLAAD’s Peter Kaiser reports. After they got hitched, Walker and Everhart (above) cut into a wedding cake adorned with scenes from other Marvel Comics weddings made out of fondant. There were some indications this was a gay wedding—the band played “It’s Raining Men”—and some that it was a comics-nerd wedding as well—the theme song from the old Spider-Man cartoon was also played. After the ceremony, the guys slipped their marriage certificate in a Mylar plastic bag with packing board to keep it in mint condition. I got my copy. I’m not gay nor do I usually read X-men but was interested enough too see it for myself. Great to see both big comic publishers having gay characters and events such as this. It sez a lot about the times we live in.

Shame you only covered the event in NY and not the other 3 stores that were promoting it as well.
