The Republican establishment is going through the stages of political death. As Donald Trump continues to gain momentum, denial that he will likely be the presidential nominee no longer works. So now it’s onto bargaining, with the party praying for a brokered convention at which they can stop Trump.
Of course, there are a few problems with the latest straw the party is grasping at. For one thing, the party would have to change the rules to stack the deck against Trump, guaranteeing a revolt the likes of which haven’t been seen since the Democratic convention in 1968. Plus, television cameras would be following every minute of the battle, creating a lethal spectacle redolent of The Hunger Games.
With typical rhetorical restraint, Trump has said that if he is close to the requisite delegates to win the nomination outright and is denied the nomination, “I think you’d have riots.” Based on the way his supporters behave at his rallies, there’s no reason to doubt the prediction.
Except, of course, Trump can easily find a way around the brokered convention. Between them, Trump and Ted Cruz will have way more than a majority of votes to control the convention. And the easiest way to do that would be to announce a Trump-Cruz ticket.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Cruz and Trump dominated once again yesterday in another round of primaries. So once you get past the visceral reaction of America’s biggest blowhard and America’s creepiest Senator joining forces, you have to admit that it makes a lot of sense.
Here are seven reasons why it could come to pass…
1.If they don’t act, they both lose
Both Trump and Cruz stand to lose at a brokered convention. The GOP elite hate Cruz only slightly less than they hate Trump. Neither would be the nominee, and they both know it. They need to get in front of the party before it has a chance to act.
2. It’s a great drop-dead to the establishment
By combining forces in a deal, Trump and Cruz could strike the final blow against the party elite, which they both despise.
3. Trump’s and Cruz’s supporters are cut from the same cloth
Each candidate’s supporters would likely be happy with the arrangement, since both groups are animated by the same anti-establishment sentiment.
4. It makes political sense
Conventional political wisdom hardly applies in this election cycle, but to the extent it does, a Trump-Cruz ticket follows the rules. It’s a geographically balanced ticket. It features a vice-presidential candidate who is well tested on the national stage.
5. It burnishes Trump’s reputation as a master deal-maker
Trump loves to think of himself as the greatest wheeler-dealer ever. This would actually be one of the few times when his dealing would live up to his hype.
6. Cruz may be the only choice Trump has got
Trump hasn’t exactly had Republican leaders falling all over him in awe. But Cruz has been generally respectful of Trump, and though Trump likes to call Cruz “Lying Ted,” he has been pretty respectful for Trump. Really, who else can Trump turn to?
7. Cruz would want to position himself for 2020
Assuming Trump loses, Cruz automatically emerges as one of the leaders for the 2020 presidential race, satisfying his long-term ambition. Not being at the top of a losing ticket will allow Cruz to pretend that his presence had nothing to do with the loss.
Now Trump could win enough delegates outright not to make the whole scenario moot. But why should Mitt Romney and his pals think that Trump would sit back and let the party roll over him? Unless, of course, they are delusional.
Or haven’t come to accepting the inevitable: that the party is terminal.

That “glitch” in the computer system in Utah last night was too convenient. I knew some where along the line this was going to happen. The voters of Utah do not appear pleased with Cruz at all and I question his win. These comments are from the Salt Lake City Tribune. They are from the local Mormon population and the majority are NOT please with Cruz. Take a look:

Sanders supporters are cheering their useless caucus wins in Utah and Idaho. Wow. Big deal. Hillary won big in Arizona and it looks like she will clean up in New York and California too.

Don’t be so sure they couldn’t win. The DNC is absolutely a mess thanks to the chair a dumbass Debbie Schultz. She’s failed at voter registration and getting out the vote in the last elections. Sanders hasn’t even talked about party unity instead ripping apart any chance of his supporters voting for HRC if he doesn’t get the Nom. John Gallagher would have some nice logical theories here, IF these two were logical human beings. But we’re talking about two wackos.
Kangol
I fear this ticket. Last night the Republicans received 530,000 votes in Arizona vs. 407,800 or so for the Democrats, and this was in a year in which Latino voters are energized and waited for hours at polling precincts around Phoenix. I really worry that Democratic voters (other than black women) are not showing up for the primary elections and may not show up in the fall, which will carry Trump-Cruz to the White House.
Their comments over the last few days (Trump called for cutting funding to NATO, then talked about torture; Cruz pushed for patrolling Muslim neighborhoods) suggest neither one has a clue about addressing terrorism, the ongoing crises in the Middle East, or foreign policy in general. Yet there are quite a few people whose fear may send them to the polls in November while people who could vote for the Democrats sit on their hands and debate this or that finer point about Sanders, Clinton, the viability of Jill Stein, or whatever seems to be the issue of the moment.
MacAdvisor
Seeing a teenager try to profess some profound opinion when he really doesn’t know anything at all is just so darn cute. Given the shallowness of the analysis displayed in this article, John Gallagher must be about 19-years old and just finished his government class.
There will not a “brokered” convention. At best we may be treated to an “open” convention. A brokered convention is one where the power brokers get together, decide who should be nominated, and then instructed their delegates to vote accordingly. However, these days, there simply aren’t such power brokers with any reasonable number of controlled delegates. Very, very few delegates depend on someone else for their power, they have created their own organization and structure. They don’t depend on a party chairman or someone else’s machine. Such dependent delegates are not absolutely extinct, but they are rare enough that their voting power won’t select a presidential nominee. In an open convention, none of the available candidates have achieved the 1,237 pledged delegates necessary to win the nomination on the first ballot, so the convention is open for the delegates to each vote for someone other than the candidate they were pledge to.
Additionally, in the Republican party, there are few of what Democrats call Superdelegates (in fact, the Republicans don’t even use the term). Rather than have each candidate name the delegates he wins in the primary, the delegates are actually often party officials or loyalists who are simply appointed to vote for the candidate on the first, maybe even the second, ballot. Thus, Trump could easily have as much as a third of his delegates hate him and be utterly ready to vote for someone else the moment their pledge is fulfilled. Therefore, the idea Cruz or Trump, both of whom are widely despised in the party. The Trump/Cruz delegates are bound to vote for their respective candidates unless there is a motion to vote by acclimation (which what generally happens when the nominee is clear). Neither Trump nor Cruz can reasonably expect their delegates to vote as they suggest.
If Trump, who will have, by far, the largest number of delegates on the first ballot is not elected, what will happen will depend greatly on the unknown preferences of the delegates to the convention. They could choose Paul Ryan on the 9th ballot with little input from any of the candidates who ran in the primaries or they could just toss in the towel and vote for Trump the front runner on the second ballot. Moreover, Trump only needs to win 53% of the delegates from here on out to have sufficient number to win on the first ballot. He did better than that last night.
If I were to place a bet, I’d put my money on Trump having enough delegates to win outright and become the presumptive nominee after California.
That all said, a Trump/Cruz ticket is very unlikely. It doesn’t unite any of the factions the party. What does Cruz bring to the ticket that Trump doesn’t provide? Nothing. Trump/Rubio might work as it would keep Trump people and might satisfy the traditional wing of the Republicans and be a sop to the Hispanics. Trump/Bush would really help with the traditional wing and also help with Florida (as would Rubio).

Kasich could just as easily sell his delegates to get the VP slot. He has 143 now, so Trump would just need 1100 to make it work.
Rishji
This was probably written before Trump asserting some form of bad behavior by Senator Cruz’s wife. If you think Chris Christie looks craven, after Sen. Cruz’s reaction to that insult, there’s no way he would have a shred of dignity left if he took the VP slot. Although the same was thought of Senator Lyndon Johnson of Texas as Veep for JFK and that was done. So maybe, but Trump should avoid any trips to Dallas.

For showing pictures of his naked wife, Trump is going to “spill the beans” on TRUSted’s wife. Could this get any more embarrassing? “Spill the beans.” These men aren’t leaders. They’re silly. It also shows Trump tapping depths of his psyche. Fight or flight has him plumbing the deep, dark recesses of his mind, long informed by the immigrant experience. A childhood colloquialism, said in a way most banal, shows him shooting from the hip. Ego is not a cool head. Both are nauseating. Neither are fit to govern themselves, let alone others in the Nation.

The political oxen on the Supreme Court gutted the voting rights act, passed Hobby-Lobby, endorsed Citizens United, and were just deciding the fate of labor Unions until Scalia took his leave and gave up his ghost. Thanks Scalia n friends….For gutting the voting Rights Act….
Previously, Maricopa County would have needed to receive federal approval for reducing the number of polling sites, because Arizona was one of 16 states where jurisdictions with a long history of discrimination had to submit their voting changes under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. This type of change would very likely have been blocked since minorities make up 40 percent of Maricopa County’s population and reducing the number of polling places would have left minority voters worse off. Section 5 blocked 22 voting changes from taking effect in Arizona since the state was covered under the VRA in 1975 for discriminating against Hispanic and Native American voters.
But after the Supreme Court gutted the VRA in 2013, Arizona could make election changes without federal oversight. The long lines in Maricopa County last night were the latest example of the disastrous consequences of that decision.

This project is very exiting, having taken the old post office and converted it to a hotel. Too bad Trump had to ruin everything by opening his mouth and being such an ass. He probably bugged all of the rooms so he can get dirt on his clients. That room shown at the top is grand and beautiful. The rugs are too cold, as is the wood chosen for the floor, but everything else is pretty perfect. The paint color behind the books could be warmer, chairs, Chippendale, the tables, beautiful mahogany double pedestals, but they likely cheaped-out on the decorator. 1880’s….not 1980’s. I hope this Trump brood can appreciate their decorator. They likely would not be easy clients for whom to decorate. Table cloths should not be used for breakfast or lunch.
