Sex happens in politics. The new Netflix series The Politician, as produced by Ryan Murphy, knows as much…even when it comes to high school politics.
The show follows the troubled class presidential campaign of closet case Peyton Hobart (Ben Platt, of Dear Evan Hansen) who will stop at nothing from realizing his political dreams. That comes much to the confoundment of his rival Astrid (Lucy Boynton), class activist Skye (Rahne Jones) and his campaign manager McAffee (Laura Dreyfuss). His dead tutor/boyfriend River (David Corenswet) has a few things to say about it too.
Queerty caught up with the cast of The Politician just ahead of its September 27 debut to discuss the sexual politics of the show, their characters and a few other pop culture touchstones…with some very funny results.

David Corenswet. Hello. Damn.
The show is fantastic and the acting is great. The song Platt sings in the first episode at the end is a dead on kill. Just watching him sing that song is enough.
Very pleased with the production and I hope they continue on for as many seasons as they can.

Yes, Platt’s singing performance was sensational. And therein lies the problem. Anyone who can put over a delicate Joni Mitchell song with that kind of sensitivity and vocal dexterity is not a superficial teen who is driven to go into politics and become president. That’s someone who is quite clearly destined to be a professional performer and who has clearly already spent hundreds of hours perfecting their vocal abilities. Much as I enjoyed certain aspects of The Politician – particularly its attempts to skewer 21st century politics – I found most of it just so far from any kind of reality that it increasingly lost me. Also totally agree with you about David Corenswet. He’s impossibly beautiful. And there’s just no way his character, River, would have made such a bold move on Payton during their first meeting.

Really? I didn’t make it past the first episode.
David is the only reason why I would’ve continued and only if he was naked.

OzJosh,
Interesting take and on the other hand Payton is way stuck up in the head with goals so much so he has lost his feeling edge that River is key in drawing out. So that bold move of a kiss was I believe tantamount in the onset of breaking up Payton’s socio-psychosis of attaining the goal of the presidency at all cost including the loss of his heart. River is his spirit guide so to speak and pierced his ego to unfurl and reignite the hidden parts of him which came out in his singing. It’s a delicate conundrum of heart vs head. Just my take but I haven’t lost interest. It doesn’t ring unrealistic to me yet but I’m only on E3. So far so good and I’m totally happy that dead David/River is still appearing for advice and love from above.
