so gay

You know we love The Straights as we illustrated in yesterday’s So Gay! list. You know whom we love more than straights? Drag queens and transgender folks. And they were everywhere this year. The top five moments in drag and trannies from 2005 is below.

5. Heatherette/Zaldy. Drag chic was all the rage in 2005 thanks to Richie Rich, Traver Raines, and Zaldy. Zaldy, a onetime runway model in drag, helped Gwen Stefani launch the LAMB line at Fashion Week. Heatherette and tranny-muse Amanda Lepore, brought club-kid fashion to the pages of People and the local Nordstrom making it OK to show your inner freak in the Midwest.

RuPaul doll

4. RuPaul. Thanks to Jonno, RuPaul started blogging way before blogging was cool. This year Ru continued that project but also got her hands in the dirty porn business, directing for Michael Lucas. But it was her doll line that really caught our eye. Finally, a doll for little gay boys! Perfect for teaching Barbie how to walk the runway.

3. Paris is Burning. More than a decade and a half since its theatrical release Jennie Livingston's classic film finally saw the light of day on DVD in 2005. Giving a face to the Harlem ball scene of the 1980s, the film has kept its power intact. Heartbreaking and empowering, it remains a must see for any gay person, fabulous or not.

2. Transamerica. Desperate Housewife Felicity Huffman plays a transsexual and receives a Golden Globe nod. The gays are all hailing Brokeback Mountain as the must-see gay film of the year. However, this little film deserves just as much attention. And Oscar may just take notice.

Barry

Elton John would never marry Barry Manilow, since he would “fuss in front of the mirror.” Which is codeword for two bottoms don’t make a top.

Amanda Lepore guests on Tyra Banks’ show. We assume they will trade tranny secrets.

ABBA is back in the spotlight thanks to Madge and are back in court too.

Jerry Lewis has written a love story about Dean Martin. They weren’t gay, but they did go through a messy break-up.

• Like you needed a reason to break out your cashmere, Gay.com has listed the top five foliage destinations for leaf-peeping queens: Provincetown, Portland, Montreal, Madison, and Asheville.

Heatherette

We rushed to Bryant Park on Friday with our photographer Randy and arrived late for the Heatherette show. Upon noticing the world's first blog star approaching, security whisked us in backstage. We ran to make it to our seats, but the show had started already. It looked like we had to remain backstage the entire show. Which is not a bad thing when surrounded by Amanda Lepore, Brandywine, Naomi Campbell, Kelly Osbourne, JC Chasez, Lizzie Grubman, Lydia Hearst, Nicky Hilton, Michael Lucas, Patrick McMullan, Tinsley Mortimer, and Zach Augustine. Richie and Traver's show was a hit. And yes, Naomi does look that good up close.

More exclusive pics after the jump.

Juanita More

Andy Warhol loved drag queens. Remember Candy Darling, Holly Woodlawn, Jackie Curtis? Mr. Warhol would have most likely loved Juanita More. Miss More is the Scissor Sister's muse who lives in San Francisco. She runs through the city with a pack of hot, half-naked boys called the Moreboys: think street gang with way too much eye-liner.

In an homage to Andy, Miss More has created a limited edition silk screen poster (only 20 made) of herself morphed into Liz Taylor. David LaChapelle did a similar style with Amanda Lepore a few years back. Juanita's poster would be great for any home. It is a work of art with a twist of kitsch and a ridiculous subject matter. Much like her t-shirt lines, these posters will be sure to sell out. Queens just keep wanting More!

Southern Decadence boxers

• After Hurricane Katrina, bigots raced to say her impact was divine retribution for the openness of homosexuality in New Orleans. Grant Storms, an evangelist pastor from Louisiana, has in the past advocated the murder of gays and lesbians. This online shop allows you to purchase undies with his face pasted quite conspicuously.

Nakedconcierge.com is one of the best sources on gay cruises. Though you already know too much about gay cruising, one thing this site can't do for you is get your ass into the gym so you'll have the body of your dreams for an actual sea-going cruise. Whether you want to tour the coast of Alaska or float in luxury in sight of Borneo, this site will help you do it with lavender pride.

• The charms of Provincetown don't end with the waning summer; indeed, hot sex between utter strangers takes place there even in the dead of winter. Here you will find a solid introductory guide to travel in Provincetown, including information about off-season attractions.

• It's never too early to think about how you'll dress on Halloween. About.com's GayLife has gay-specific costume ideas as well as links to related topics such as the making of a Halloween costume. Look for me at the parade this year; I’m going as Amanda Lepore.

• Out counter-tenor sensation David Daniels has his own web site with useful tidbits about his recordings and appearances. You can even send him a personal message, but don't confuse this class act with the "bargain counter-tenor" of P.D.Q. Bach fame.
