Openly gay Irish presidential candidate David Norris dropped out of the race last month when the media started reporting that he had once written a letter asking the Israeli court for clemency against an alleged statutory rapist. But now that he’s seen a poll suggesting that he could actually win the presidency, Norris has reportedly decided to re-join the race.
There’s no better quality in a presidential candidate than making important decisions based entirely on approval ratings. But snarkiness aside, we do hope he wins, namely because openly gay heads of state totally rawk.

Q: What would the Catholic Church do if a homo won the Irish Presidency?
A: They would make a big stink about it being terrible for the children…or something.

Although you link to the story of the openly gay Prime Minister of Iceland, the Prime Minister is never the head of state. The Prime Minister is the head of government, with either a monarch or (mostly) ceremonial president being the head of state (in Iceland’s case, a president).
There has yet to be an openly gay head of state in modern world history.
