First Lady Jill Biden has once again inflamed anti-LGBTQ+ right wingnuts.
This week, Dr. Biden, along with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, hosted the 17th annual International Women of Courage Awards.
The State Department has handed out awards to over 180 women from more than 80 countries since 2007. This year was the first time the ceremony was held at the White House, on “the biggest stage we could,” the First Lady said.
First Lady Dr. Jill Biden has tapped openly gay Los Angeles-based designer Mark D. Sikes to help redecorate her East Wing offices.
Biden and Blinken honored 11 global women leader to mark International Women’s Day and recognize those with “exceptional courage, strength, and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equity and equality, often at great personal risk and sacrifice.”

Among the honorees was Alba Rueda, a trans activist from Argentina, who Dr. Biden warmly greeted on stage and posed for photos with.
“In Argentina, Alba Rueda is transgender woman who was kicked out of classrooms, barred for sitting for exams, refused job opportunities, subjected to violence, and rejected by her family,” the announcer said. “But in the face of these challenges, she worked to end violence and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community in Argentina.”
The fact that Biden and Blinken honored a trans woman when we’re seeing a record number of anti-trans bills being pushed through state legislatures is notable. Over 400 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in 38 states this year alone.
Naturally, right wingnuts are losing it. They’ve been tweeting all sorts of transphobic garbage at Dr. Biden for shaking hands with Rueda.
Jill Biden presented the International Women of Courage award to a man on International Womens Day.
46-year-old Rueda became the first openly trans politician in Argentina to hold a senior governmental position when she was named the Undersecretary of Diversity Policies within the Ministry of Women, Genders and Diversity in January 2020.
In addition to receiving one of this year’s International Women of Courage Awards, in 2021 she was included as one of the BBC’s 100 Women, honoring the most influential women in the world, and in 2022, she was included in Time magazine’s Time 100 Next list.

Abfab. you’re usually a sharp reader and commenter but you completely missed my point. I disagree with Biden’s approval of this horrible drilling project. I find it extremely objectionable. It will destroy the environment. But the fact remains, millions of Americans want more domestic energy sources, including more oil drilling. One of the two major parties is fixated on it. Remember the election of two former oilmen, George HW Bush (a real one) and George W Bush (a failed one)? Remember Obama and the push for fracking and lower gas prices? Remember McCain and Palin and “Drill, baby, drill”? Remember Don the Con’s drive for more drilling? And above all, remember 2022 and high gas prices and the endless screeching from the “liberal” US media and Republicans and even many Democrats, when it was clear, as Janet Yellen said and as is the case now, that gas prices would come down? But also remember Biden scrambling over to Saudi Arabia to kiss up to MBS in order to bring prices down? We need a lot more investment in renewable energy sources!
I haven’t read about this Alaskan oil project you are commenting on, so I can’t really address the specifics. I would guess, knowing this administration, that a great deal of thought has gone into whatever it is they have approved. They have been the most progressive administration EVER with regards to trying to limit carbon emissions.
Dr. Jill Biden is smart, classy and humane, and honoring Rueda, particularly at a time when there is a concerted anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ push by the US right, is necessary and brave.
I do hope Queerty decides to publishing some pieces on 1) the recent news uncovering how this anti-trans legislation isn’t random but part of a secret push to attack and demonize trans and LGBTQ people; and 2) how the far right-wing Teneo organization, linked to the founded of the Federalist Society, is trying to roll back rights and shove the country in an extreme right-wing direction.
What’s with all this shit dumping on President Biden? He does his job as chief executive and mostly out of the spotlight. Does anybody here know what he has done, is doing, and wants to get done?
