Music biopics were all the past couple of years, with 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody and 2019’s Rocketman and Judy. So it makes perfect sense that Madonna is jumping on that bandwagon, albeit slightly after the trend has peaked.
The singer recently announced that she’s busy working with famed screenwriter Diablo Cody on a movie script about her life. Now, The Wrap reports that the untitled vanity project has landed at Universal. Not only that, but Madonna herself is set to direct.
So far, all of this feels very on brand. And we love it.
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer–a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” the singer said in a statement. “The focus of this film will always be music.”
She added, “Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, and her long-time tour documentary producer Sara Zambreno will serve as executive producers on the film.
During an Instagram Live session last week, Madonna said the film will chronicle her life coming up as an artist in 1980’s New York and her friendships with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Martin Burgoyne.
She said it will also touch on defining moments in her musical career, including writing “Like a Prayer” and filming the notorious music video, as well as her time making Evita and her strained relationship with Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Fans seem to have mixed reactions to the singer co-writing and directing her own biopic. Here’s what they are saying…
Have seen some eyerolling in my feed about Madonna directing her own biopic, to which I can only say: are you out of your fucking minds?
The most interesting – not the best, the most *interesting* – version of a Madonna biopic is absolutely Madonna directing her own biopic.

Madonna directing her own biopic is an incredibly vain thing to do, but I’m also kind of here for it? Seems like the most Madonna thing imaginable to do. She showed some flair for directing during W.E. (which got an Oscar nom), and she’s got a good writer on board.

It’s definitely gonna end with Madonna triumphantly directing the Madonna biopic.

Madonna has been increasingly Not Ok on here lately, but i am 100% down for her helming her own biopic with Diablo Cody, are you fucking kidding me? inject it into my veins already.

How extensively do we think Candy Shop will feature in the Madonna biopic
— Joel Freeman (@JoelJFreeman) September 15, 2020
Usually other people do that while the subject of the biopic consults to avoid bias.
If the actual person co-writes and directs any one of their flaws will be dismissed and it’ll just become an ego project.
Hopefully I’m wrong tho.

Love Madonna, but directing your own biopic should be outlawed.
— Jack Nix (@jackmnix) September 15, 2020
Now, to be clear, I don’t think it’s wise for Madonna to direct her own biopic, but I’ll take what I can get.

Taking narcissism to a whole new level.

No one will remember Rocketman in 10 years, but we absolutely will still be watching the Madonna biopic directed by Madonna

No word yet on who will play Madonna in the Madonna-directed Madonna biopic or when it might be released, but here’s hoping it’s better than that other Madonna biopic.

Let me guess. It will show every decision she ever made was brilliant, everything she did was amazing, all her friends were interesting and she never made any mistakes ever.
Loki9521
Let me guess. She will cast her daughter and leave out everything but the music. They could stage it as a fantasy musical and leave out all the sex, drugs but keep in the implied lesbianism. It could be one big dream sequence and leaves out all the ruthless lifestyle.

Seriously WTF is up with Graham’s constant hatred for Madonna? Is he an obsessed Gaga fan, secretly a bitter Patti LuPone blogging on here and angry she didn’t get cast in Evita or just a bitter twat that acts like Madge pissed in his coffee every time he writes an article about her? Look back on every post about her…it’s completely pathetic.
Madonna is an icon and an ally. I’m so sick of his bitterness and anger towards someone that has been with us from day 1. She sometimes does stuff I don’t like but the constant hate thrown at everything she does by Graham is infuriating.

Sorry so triggered, but Madonna peaked in 1987. Now she’s just a freak.

What she doesn’t understand is neither Elton John nor Freddie Mercury were greedy opportunists like her. I loved her in her twenties but now I can’t stand her. I can only wonder if she does go thru with this movie will she have scenes where she is in her limousine riding thru East Harlem picking up dark skinned latino men whom she felt were hung. Somehow I think that part of her off stage career will be overlooked. Seriously, who really cares enough about Madonna to even go to see a biopic on her? What can there be in that biopic that got left out of all of her other never ending documovies?

You must care, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading and commenting

That poor, deranged old woman, she is the victim of her own success
The sycophants who are drawn toward wealth and fame encourage celebrities to treat them like toilet paper
The sycophants have inferiority complex, they want to be treated badly buy someone ‘superior’ to confirm their low self esteem
The celebrities also have inferiority complexes, but circumstances have allowed them to confirm their low self esteme in a different manner
They do this by treating their sycophants like a lower life form. This makes them feel like them feel bad about themselves for being horrible people. It also makes them feel lonely, because they drive everyone away
When you cannot get love from the people around you, you need it from the wider world.
Thus a biopoc
Max
what happened to her and her relevance?

Just NO! it shouldn’t be allowed.

No one has ever exploited Madonna better than Madonna. She has always been both madam and whore. It’s been fun to watch her reinvent herself and her look over the decades. Lately, unfortunately, her new look seems to show her for exactly like what she is – a woman in her 60s trying to look 25. Enough with the pigtails, grandma.
LukeHeavens
Artist? Definitely. Singer? Passable. Musician? Skin flute. Dancer? Sure. Human Being? Meh.

I see absolutely no reason why Madonna shouldn’t produce, direct – and star – in her own biopic.
Don’t just stand there, let’s get to it
Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it.

She’d break a hip at this point

I found the comments more entertaining then the actual article.

Madge, Madge, Madge….
Nobody cares.
Freak.
