A 22-year-old man was charged Thursday with killing openly gay Mississippi mayoral candidate, Marco McMillian.
According to the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department, Lawrence Reed of Shelby was charged with the murder of McMillian, 34, whose body was found Wednesday morning near the Mississippi River levee.
The day before, Reed crashed McMillian’s SUV head on into another car on U.S. Highway 49 near the Coahoma and Tallahatchie county lines. McMillian, however, was not in the car at the time.
Reed was taken to the hospital after the car crash and was listed in good condition on Thursday.
Though McMillian’s autopsy has been completed, a spokesman with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said toxicology and other test results are pending. After they are finished, McMillian’s cause of death will be made public.
The sheriff’s department has not released a possible motive for the murder and little is known about Reed or the nature of his relationship with McMillian. An apartment complex listed as Reed’s recent address was rented by another man who has since moved out and the complex’s manager said he did not know Reed.

This is so strange. I hope there is going to be justice for Marco because he would have been apart of the positive tipping point for a state with so much history of foolishness.
