Mitt Romney Was Totally For Gay Marriage Until Yesterday

Joe Sudbay from AmericaBlog points out that previous to signing the National Organization of Marriage’s pledge to fight marriage equality with every fiber of his being, GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney boasted that he’d be a great advocate for gay rights. Uh-huh…

… In his 1994 Senate campaign against Democrat Edward Kennedy that he would be a greater advocate for gay rights than Kennedy…

And, it wasn’t just back in 1994. Mitt courted the gays in 2002…

When he ran against Ted Kennedy for the Senate in 1994, Romney wrote a letter to the Massachusetts Log Cabin Club, pledging that as “we seek to establish full equality for American gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent.”…

While running for governor in 2002, Romney and his running mate, Kerry Healey, distributed pink fliers at a Gay Pride parade, declaring “Mitt and Kerry wish you a great Pride weekend.” He backed domestic partner benefits for public employees, winning the endorsement of the national Log Cabin Republicans. In his inaugural speech, he promised to defend civil rights “regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or race.”

As governor, he appointed openly gay and lesbian people to high-profile administration positions. He doubled the budget line item for the Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, until he tried to disband it last May — more political theater for the Republican right.

So, Romney was a big gay-lover just until the last two years when he decided he needed the religious right gay-haters in order to become president. Typical, pathetic Republican. They are a party that no longer believes in anything.

Did we mention that Romney has more flip-flops than an Old Navy? Last time we checked, he was also the front runner for the GOP nomination.

Mitt Romney is a liar and panderer. He has no moral convictions and will sell a relative to slavery if it means getting elected. The only reason MA has same-sex marriage is because of the courts. This bigot threatened to veto if it passed the legislature and to this day still doesn’t accept it. Romney is worst than drag queen Giuliani when it comes to flip flops and is just another corporate hack taking orders from Wall Street and Salt Lake City.

and remember… When Marriage Equality passed in MA, Romney dragged from the dustbin some unenforced law from the mid-1800’s that required people married in MA to reside in MA, thereby preventing gayz from arriving from around the nation to take advantage of the right.

Could this be the year when America, media, everyone but the extreme, makes it known that they just don’t give a shiz about whether gay people marry other gay people???

Please let it be so. I’m exhausted.

@tjr101: Liar? Pandereer? No, bigot. Just as Obama is opposed to marriage of gays. Bigot.

Obama is against gay marriage, too.
Why get on your high horse against Mitt and let Obama coast?

I have so little faith in the strength of Mitt Romney’s convictions I’m surprised he’s still a Mormon. Seriously, the bar is so low every day he’s not on the 700 Club jumping over bushes and claiming to be born again I want to start a slow clap.

By signing NOM’s pledge, Romney signed his own political death warrant. He will never be elected president.

No. 6, and which peaces of equality legislation has the GOP authored or sponsored lately? Name one! Name one they’ll introduce if Romney or Bachmann get the nod. The democrats don’t legislate against us, the republicans do with impunity. Just look at their record on repeal of DADT compared to democrats. Who is sponsoring repeal of DOMA,in their party? NOT ONE key republican in the House or Senate. Civil Libertarian republican Ron Paul is against repeal and of course none of the radical right tea party republican scumbaggers are either. I’ll take Obama any day over them.

@Ronbo: Obama doesn’t support DOMA or a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage but then again that doesn’t matter to you GOProuders does it?

I have been watching a lot of documentaries about Mormons….both pro and con.

I am here to tell you they are one of the most fucked up cults I have ever read about. They are evil to the core and not ONE of them should be allowed to run for office.
The more I research them, the more I think they should not be allowed to walk the planet freely.

I feel sorry for any child that might be born into this religion for they must choose to alienate their parents or eat bullshit every day.

So, he wants to “heterosexualize” (a new word I learned at AFA) us with the Bachmann’s so-called “Reperative Therapy” into illicit, unnatural so-called “straight marriages” that can only end in flames and failure . . .
      Not a prayer of a chance . . .

As I look at the cards being layed down by Romney and Bachmann, and unemployment reducing, it would seem the super powers that rule over presidencies (and the world) are signing O’bama on for another 4 years. This means the economy will improve over the next year. Watch on as it is a very maticulously controlled game and we are just the pawn observers. Orwell 1984 has arrived.

DANIEL VILLARREAL LEARN TO DO A LEAST A LITTLE FACT CHECKING: Mitt Romney WAS NEVER EVER FOR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE! He fought it tooth-and-nail; tried to get the Mass legislature to put a constitutional amendment before the people to overturn the Mass Supreme Judicial Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage.

Romeny’s hypocrisy, in this case, is the same as Maggot Gallagher’s. Both Romney and Maggot have repeatedly supported civil-unions and lgbt civil rights.

Now, the NOM pledge contains requirements that candidates are AGAINST lgbt civil rights and appoint judges/justices that are against lgbt civil rights.

Romney and Maggot show their true colors here: they HATE the gays. Any conciliatory comments about how gay/lesbian couples should enjoy the protection of the law, except the benefit of the word “marriage” is 100% bullshit. Of course, what should one expect from such hideous excuses for humans as Romney and Maggot other than spewing bullshit from their mouths and minds?

Romney is in bed with the Evangelicals on marriage equality, even though he’s Mormon. I guess you just give up your true self when you enter politics.

My favorite part of this “Pledge”is to set up a committee to investigate harassment of
      Christians opposed to marriage equality.

Ppoor Christian victims – they have no shame in their attempts to make themsleves out as so burdened by responses to the hate they themselves promote.

This does not surprise me at all. Mitt Romney has the personality of a used car salesman. I want to know more about the members of NOM. It’s one thing to be homophobic, but dedicating your entire life to this cause is something completely different. I have figured out a way to solve the NOM dilemma: go to a meeting, slip ecstasy or Spanish flies into their drinks and sit back and watch the gay orgy. Dick: it does a body good.
