Papal Contender Cardinal Peter Turkson Claims African Traditions Prevent Homosexuality

Cardinal_TuksonShortly after Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour interviewed papal frontrunner, Ghanian Cardinal Peter Turkson.

As the Catholic religion is growing fastest in Africa and Asia, many are wondering if the next Pontiff could come from outside Europe. Highlighting these geographical differences, Amanpour asked Turkson if a Catholic priest sex scandal could sweep through Africa as it had through Europe several years ago, to which Turkson replied:

“Unfortunately not in the same proportion that we have seen in Europe. African traditional systems kind of protect or have protected its population against this tendency. Because in several communities, in several cultures in Africa homosexuality or for that matter any affair between two sexes of the same kind are not countenanced in our society.”

CNN notes that according to the American Psychiatric Association, “homosexual men are not more likely to sexually abuse children than heterosexual men are.” But Turkson, who defended Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” bill, seems blissfully unaware of that fact so maybe he’s got what it takes to be Pope after all.

Whether from Africa, Asia or wherever — you can take the Pope from out of Europe, but it seems you can’t take that good ole-fashioned Roman Catholic homophobia out of the Pope.

How is this not a hate group….the good thing is that it’s irrelevant. And what is it they say about front runners? walk in a pope walk out a cardinal…

Yeah the “African tradition” of repeating what was taught to you by Catholic missionaries over a century ago.

And sadly, too many African Americans buy into the lie that “homosexuality” was “introduced” into Africa by “white Europeans”

@QJ201: It was only christianity that introduced homophobia. Homosexuality of course is as old as civilization and in all cultures. I hope hie the pick for the next pope. At least it will polarize and alienate moderate and progressive catholics even more that many will end up leaving or renouncing their faith for something else.

@QJ201: That argument is too simple, based on your own prejudices, and actually rather condescending to Africans.

As someone who has actually lived abroad (in nonchristian Asia), I’ve seen that prejudice and intolerance exist everywhere.

@alexoloughlin: Aye, now is the perfect time for an ultra conservative to take the reigns, there’s hundreds of millions of christians on the verge of walking away from their faith and rejoining human society.

We need to make these people feel as awkward as possible with their faith skin because their faith is not compatible with morals, education and living in the new century.

“African traditional systems kind of protect or have protected its population against this tendency. “. It’s good that the church can still count on the 3rd world countries to keep ignorance alive.

“Unfortunately”? He wants a child-molesting scandal? Freudian slip, or the usual lousy Queerty copy-editing?
