“Homosexuality is so much in fashion it no longer makes news. Like a large number of men, I, too, have had homosexual experiences and I am not ashamed. I have never paid much attention to what people think about me. But if there is someone who is convinced that Jack Nicholson and I are lovers, may they continue to do so. I find it amusing.” —Marlon Brando to biographer Gary Carey in 1976

That quote has been well known for decades. Hell, it’s on his Wiki page. Stop acting like anything’s been “unearthed”.
Xzamilloh
Right? I thought the same thing. That isn’t new.
SiamSam
But this is Queerty. What’s old is “news” again.

Why is this relevant to gay men in 2018?
Donston
It’s of course not. It is however once again homosexual behavior being used primarily for sensationalistic purposes. It’s also funny since Brando and Pryor’s multi-gender, extremely promiscuous and partying ways were hardly unknown before Quincy’s quotes.
crowebobby
Brando admitted to having had sex with men in a very early interview with Truman Capote. But he was pissed with Capote printed it.

I’m so glad Marlon was not besotted with identity politics. Note that he treated homosexuality as a quality, not as an identity.
I don’t totally disparage the value of identity politics but, for men who are primarily attracted to women, it’s of no use. It simply creates an unrealisric under-class.
Donston
This is actually something I can somewhat agree with you on. Sex is just sex. There isn’t much value from either a psychological or socialogical standpoint in coming out or connecting yourself to the “queer struggle” if your attractions, passions and romantic satisfaction don’t veer away from the opposite cis gender and that’s something you embraced. Unfortunately, because you’re obsessed with other types of men it’s ruined your self-worth and your views on non-closeted, self-accepting gay and gay-leaning guys.

He was absolutely brilliant in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “On the Waterfront”.

I don’t remember homosexuality being in fashion in 1976. I remember a whole lot mockery of the gay stereotype all over TV and the movies.
Polaro
Homosexuality was in trending upward in the late 70s through the early 80s and was cutting-edge fashionable, especially in music. It was trendy and cool; straight people were flocking to gay discos to the point of it becoming annoying. And then AIDS hit and reset everything. True, it wasn’t in rural areas, but nothing is fashionable there, then or now. AIDS did not just kill a lot of us, it set the movement towards acceptance back decades.
Jaxton
You are correct. Homosexuality has never been fashionable. It’s not a fashion, after all.

That whole Bowie thing. The beginning of disco and that whole cocaine thing.
Kind of like in the mid 90s they start saying lesbians were all the rage, Anne Heche was just faking it to help her career…
History is a funny thing…

Andy Warhol and the Factory, were “Homosexuals” and Super Models and straight trendsetter, would drink and do drugs and talk about art and music.
They’ve made countless number of movies about it…like 50 plus

I love Brando. One of my favorite all time actors. It’s great to see his spirit alive. He was a real star. None now can compare to him. These new Hollywood actors can’t hold a flame to him. Except Sidney Poitier and a few legends still living. Here’s to you Brando alive in 2018.
tham
Young Brando was so hot.
Dubr1988
Agreed.
