A Sensuous First Look At ‘Tom Of Finland: The Movie’

“A story of a homosexual James Bond” is how Aleksi Bardy, the screenwriter of the new Tom of Finland movie describes his film.

There’s a lovely lush new trailer out for the project, hinting at the glimpses of flesh and kissing and explosions. “This man, doing his art in a time like that, is about courage. It’s about freedom of having your fantasies and creating your utopia,” said director Dome Karukoski. “It’s about joy.”

It’s hard to discern too much about the movie from the trailer. We just see some flashes of imagery — and, surprisingly, relatively little leather and fetish gear. But then again, you don’t want to spook audiences too much before they show up.

We see a man walking out on stage in some shiny black apparel; a nervous meeting in a park at night; various mid-century parties, and Tom thoughtfully signing his name at the bottom of some naked men’s legs.

At a recent press conference, Dome described how the actors playing Tom and his lover were cast together to make sure they had the right chemistry — so it’s likely to be a love story as well.

“The role of a lifetime,” says Pekka Strang, who plays Tom.

The movie comes out in Finland in February, just in time for the country’s 100 year anniversary of independence.
