The Commonwealth is basically a club of nations who used to be territories of the British Empire. In a spirit of friendship and shared history, the old British Empire Games became the Commonwealth Games.

I can understand some saying there might be a little too much Tom Daley in evidence but let us be fair and admit young Tom is a durable mega-star and something of a role model for very many young men who may have some difficulty living their sexuality. The first thing Tom does is snag himself a Hollywood A-lister and they appear all monogamous, together, – not a bad start in the romance stakes, I suggest. Heaven help us, Tom is handsome and has an ultra desirable body, whatever you say, so don’t let us become all anti-Tom, please. He does a good job and as a gay Brit I am proud of him.

@Zodinsbrother: There’s a bit more to it. The countries have to still share a symbolic bond with Britain, i.e. Canada, which has the Queen on its currency. On the other hand, the US, although a former British colony, has never participated. If I’m not mistaken, Hong Kong used to participate as a British territory, but has not done so since returning to China. Also note that not all Commonwealth nations were British territories. The link can be indirect. For example, Samoa is a member through New Zealand, and Namibia through South Africa. This year’s games had more than 70 participating nations, making it the second largest athletic event after the Olympics.

I wasn’t aware that there are rules and guidelines on what we can fund attractive. That sounds alarmingly like homophobes who claim that same-sex attraction is abnormal or a mental illness. Even law enforcement never says that pedophiles can’t find children attractive. They merely say that adults can’t act on those impulses.
