It is now very much a crime in Russia to share any images that depict President Vladimir Putin as a gay clown, and while the implications may be serious within the country, the rest of the Internet has taken a decidedly different approach to the request.
It started with one little meme:
The image was subsequently shared thousands of times on blogs, forums and social media.
But that’s not all.

These are clever images, and I relish the freedom of speech. From their shore, however, people are being killed and detained. Poking sticks at a snorting, furious, desperate beast seems untimely. His election is coming up; his GDP is smallish, and he’s losing footing on the world stage. Escalation never presents good options. Desperate squirrels do squirrelly things. Focusing on LGBTQ detainees would yield more than mocking his latent tendencies. Who’s next? Oppressed people care more about their safety than our freespeechmocking of their man, smallish in stature, and operating with a worldly mindset. Russia’s GDP represents 2.15 percent of the world economy. Of course, he has eyes for more. The only way to even the playing field is to lessen others. He does this by destroying Democracy, be it in the Ukraine or the U.S. Reporters die. Gays die. Politicians who dare to run against him die. Death permeates his skin, acrid and caustic. Focus on the detainees and get information to the people. They need to oust him. They need information. They need hope.

I agree with your points, except your post makes the assumption that we can only do one or the other. Political and economic pressure can be put on them through business and official channels, and your average twitter user can also mock Putin.
Remember, the Russians think of Putin as this invincible strongman, then they see him mocked worldwide and it gets into their heads, he slowly becomes a joke. A lot of his power is perception.
