WATCH: Die Antwoord’s “I Fink You Freaky”

We’re not sure how we feel: On the one hand, the visuals to Roger Ballen and Ninja’s video for South African speed-rap band Die Antwoord‘s “I Fink You Freaky,” are astounding. But the break-neck, high-pitch delivery isn’t doing it for us. Then again, the bass is infectious. Maybe we’ll just crank it up and clean the apartment.

absolutely the 1st “high concept” song/video i have liked in a decade or more. i think the last may have been “i want to f**k you like an animal” by nine inch nails/trent reznor.

    @jack

You mean ‘Closer’? Great track..Trent is a fantastic songwriter..he was never in it for the shock value, but the recipe always turned out to be some shock rock formula.
Just a question Queerty: this came out months ago..are you just blogging because you just st came across it?

LOL Oh Queerty, such divine humour! “Crank it up and clean the apartment.”, because gays love the meth, most people in the video are dirty and have bad teeth like crank addicts, and the video looks like it was shot in a meth-flop house. So droll. (For the less intelligent, this is sarcasm. Also, meth has many ‘street names’, one of which is crank)

And the answer (die antwoord) “homophobes?” yep. Watch the next sexy video ‘Evil boy’. He ain’t gay.

Yet again, another visually interesting video accompanied by cheap electronic music that anyone could make in 2 hours or less.

  • Coffee&Chicory

@Kev C: then do it better yourself.

  • Well

@Roby, I doubt it is as simple as you say. One of the three members of Die Antwoord, DJ Hi-Tek, is gay.

A quote from an interview with lead singer Ninja: “Our manager Tony in LA was a little concerned that some of the words we use in the video would upset some people in the USA – especially DJ Hi-Tek’s use of the word ‘faggot’,” explains Ninja. “DJ Hi-Tek is gay,” he explains, “so there you go, now you all know.”
Ninja adds: “Hi-Tek says the word faggot doesn’t hold any power over him. Hi-Tek says faggot all the time. He’s taken that word and made it his bitch.”

  • Oh well

@Roby, you should also read the interview regarding Evil Boy in Mother Jones for context. When the black guy raps “Don’t touch my penis” he is taunting the very homophobic traditional Xhosa elders who want to circumcise him, casting aspersions on their heterosexuality. From the interview, quoting Ninja, the lead singer: “Now the thing is, about those men you have to go to the bush with. Xhosa culture is un-f*****g-believeably homophobic. They like, do not dig gays—with the volume up! So Wanga thought it was funny that they then take a 19-year-old’s penis in their hand and cut their foreskin off with a kitchen knife. So Wanga made a joke: “Don’t touch my penis. I’m not a gay.” It’s basically like the most severe taunt you can throw at a Xhosa man. So that’s where that line comes from. Like, whatever. Like DJ Fishsticks, who’s done our remix. He’s gay and nobody really cares.”

From another interview with the lead singer: “Our manager Tony in LA was a little concerned that some of the words we use in the video would upset some people in the USA – especially DJ Hi-Tek’s use of the word ‘f****t’,” explains Ninja. “DJ Hi-Tek is gay,” he explains, “so there you go, now you all know.”
Ninja adds: “Hi-Tek says the word f****t doesn’t hold any power over him. Hi-Tek says f****t all the time. He’s taken that word and made it his b****.”

In the video “FOK JULLE NAAIERS” by DIE ANTWOORD at the end they go on about fucking faggots in the ass.

I also read they the song Evil Boy was not meant as anti-gay and supposedly they gave a gay DJ.

So I’m confused? Are they homophobes or gay friendly and just pushing the envelope.

Every generation needs a Maryiln Manson type so I hope they are not bigots.

@Coffee&Chicory: I have better taste than to make dubstep or rap or whatever 2-bit noise this is. Open a template in Fruity Loops, hit randomize = instant original song. That’s why modern music sucks.

  • Oh well

@jeff4justice, it is the actual gay member (DJ) of the group who sings the bit about the f****ts. I guess it is like the American black rappers who use the n-word.

  • Oh well

@Robert, they just have a look that is associated with a certain dirt-poor white laborer underclass in South Africa. It really doesn’t translate to the methhead in the American context.

    Love Die Antwoord!
