Elizbeth Edward was a beautiful, kind, person. I pray for her children, wish them the best. Ms. Edward lived and believed in peace. During her whole life, even when life was the toughest for her, she never struck out against the people who meant to do her the most harm. In her memory, I won’t say what I want to say about this church, won’t do to them what I want to do.

OK, hear me out. Yes, I think the Westboro Baptist “Church” nutballs are batshit crazy, evil, and hateful. I was also sort of hoping they’d at least get beaten up while protesting soldiers’ funerals.
But I also think they may be the most effective gay rights campaigners in the last 10 or 15 years. They are SO stupid, evil, and hateful they make other homophobes temper their rhetoric (in the US anyway, Africa’s a different story apparently) and put them on the defensive.
You could have Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, Adam Lambert, and Ricky Martin ALL go on tour speaking to High Schools and it wouldn’t result in mass protests supporting gay people. But when the WBC takes their act on the road protesting at High Schools and Colleges for whatever reason, student protests like that DO result- students make their own signs and scream back at the hate of the WBC. They teach by negative example, much like the hate-filled faces of whites protesting desegregation in the 1960s made people across the country look at themselves ans their attitudes toward race.
Not that I support the WBC in any way. I just think the net effect of their insanity has been positive for gays.

@greenmanTN: Where your example starts to fail is that when the whites examined their own views on race as compared to the bat shit crazies of the time they simply decided that it was ok to be racist just not ok to be outwardly racist. What resulted was a hidden separatism and segregation that last till this day. Just ask any black family how welcome they feel in small town America, even in the north. Look how many black people are in the Tea Party Movement. Look at the disproportionate number of black men in prison for mostly non-violent drug crimes.

I don’t see how anyone could want to be religious and in some form or another be related to religious dogma when you can just as well be “spiritual” grounded, appreciate mother nature and earth, be open to POSSIBLY something beyond this but honest enough to admit not knowing but kind enough to lead your life on this planet with respect for all.
