Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, otherwise known as the creepy uncle of the antigay “religious freedom” movement, has a message for members of the Westboro Baptist Church: You cannot use your religion to justify picketing the funerals of the victims from last week’s shooting in Lafayette.
Jindal instructed state police to “take swift and immediate action” to prevent disruptions of the memorial services of 21-year-old Mayci Breaux and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson. The announcement came one day after members of the Westboro Baptist Church said they planned exercise their “religious freedom” by picketing the women’s funerals.

Of course, it’s easy for Jindal to take stand against a hate group like the Westboro Baptist Church, which is loathed by pretty much everyone, even those on the far-right (mostly for making a mockery of antigay views). And we can’t ignore the major inconsistencies in Jindal’s message here. When it comes to “religious freedom,” the governor draws the line at protesting people’s funerals, which, BTW, is totally protected speech, no matter how vile.
How about we take this to the next level?

Discriminating against LGBT people, however, is totally fine.
Sorry, Bobby, no cigar.

The westboro baptists actually follow the bible as written. You pick and choose what you ‘believe’. Well, except that whole neighbor part
AtticusBennett
here’s the deal with the GOP and the Fox News Morons – they only hate the WBC when they protest the funerals OF STRAIGHT PEOPLE.
there’s a hideous clip you can find on youtube of Sean Hannity addressing the westboro’s, and he makes the comment “Look, i don’t like what these people do, either” – and the “people” he’s talking about are gay people.
yes. Sean Hannity tried to “build a bridge” with the Westboros, and BOND over the fact that he too hates gays and thinks we’re disgusting, but objected to the WBC protesting the funerals of straight soldiers.
hating the WBC is an easy way to ignore your own “Christian Bigotry” – but the reality is this – the WBC are not the enemy. they convince NOBODY to hate gay people. the GOP and FOX? their business model revolves around demonizing us.
Alex Rothwell
Well at least for now.

“Look, I don’t like what these people do, either.” True… Hannity does say that, and what he meant, and mostly denies today, is that he believes we are gay by choice and that we should just get a girl and all would be fine. It’s standard Catholic bigotry, so he came by it honestly I guess. The back story is that Hannity has long been dogged by rumors of an early affair with another man. If true, and I think it probably is, then Hannity is authentically bisexual and feels intense guilt for his past feelings and indiscretions.
It’s sad, and until we call these people out, it will never stop.

So Bobby Jindal agrees with basically everything that the WBC supports, but NOW doesn’t like them.
Jindal defended the religious freedom argument, so the fun part will be, if he does stop them, and WBC sues him, he will then have to have the state defend NOT allowing them to picket in spite of the religious freedom argument.
WBC has inadvertently been a huge help to gay rights. Even FOX News had to back off the many attacks on gays when the WBC was in the news, because they were terrified of being associated with them, even though they both basically believed most of the same things.

…but as for Jindal: he’s just an idiot.

WBC is a family, most of them lawyers, who sue people into submission based off the First Amendment. And they win, and they don’t pay taxes.Real life trolls. It’s amazing how many people don’t get this.

Too bad he didn’t order the fire hoses turned on them. I sure as hell would and would give one damn about what it reminded people of. THEY (this so called religious group) sure as hell are asking for it. You don’t picket military funerals and victims of shit like a theatre shooting. You are there for the sole reason of asking to get your ass kicked and I think they are long overdue for what they seek.
Scott Haltom
Maybe they find him the same way.

Sadly, his fundamentalist Christian and tea party policies are right in line with WBC. I would think he would love them!

These aren’t “religious” people. If they actually read the “Bible”, the people at “WBC”, would be under the category as a false religion. In which is blasphemy, which he doesn’t tolerate. Which brings me to point out, that he is disappointed with how most humans are.

Despite claims that she personally murdered 4 people in Benghazi and has some super-secret squirrel emails confirming it, Hillary Clinton topped the list of most admired woman for seventeen of the last eighteen years.
The news doesnâ??t bode well for Republican Presidential candidates, since Clinton currently holds no public office. Her popularity continues to rise as Americans tire of Republican policy failures.

Has NOTHING to do with gay rights. Jindal the bigot and the WBC bigots are both just trying to make hay out of the funerals of women who were randomly shot in a crime that had nothing to do with gay rights. I keep thinking some of the Republican candidates will read the polls and realize pedaling hatred for the gays is no longer a winning strategy, but this is not that.

The WBC picketed the funerals of gay AIDS victims for years and nobody cared except for gay people and sometimes the deceased people’s families. Certainly, few politicians lifted a finger to help. It wasn’t until they started picketing military funerals that they got any real attention, and then the politicians were falling all over themselves to pass constitutionally-suspect laws to stop the protests.

Even Dubya wouldn’t dream of having approval ratings this fucking low.
Bobby Dumbass Jindal took a $1.1 billion surplus from Democrat Kathleen Blanco and turned it into a $1.6 billion deficit. How do you manage that? Well republicans do it.
That’s why the ever so popular Hillary Clinton is the only option for this country. We cannot allow these mental midgets power.

@Ladbrook:
You said: “The back story is that Hannity has long been dogged by rumors of an early affair with another man”.
I never heard this before, but I have always been suspicious of Hannity. My gaydar went off the first time I saw him, and I feel like there might be some substance to the rumors.
Malcom Gladwell in his simple, yet profound book “Blink” says that you know it when you see it, the truth is felt on a profound level and anything short of the truth is patently obvious. In Hannity’s case I feel the truth shows itself, he likes the guys. Maybe bi, sure, but he definitely likes a little something in his mouth once in a while. Probably tends toward mocha, or even dark chocolate. Good for him.

If you don’t like a politician of color, you’re obviously r@cist.
Hasn’t the age of Obama taught you anything?
Giancarlo85
@BJ McFrisky: Here we go again with the off key remarks. Obama is a good President and Jindal is an incredibly shitty governor with an approval rating lower than Richard Nixon had during Watergate. What more do you want? If Bobby ran for governor again he would lose in Louisiana. They cannot stand him. Like every Republican, he mismanages everything he gets his hands on.

@BJ McFrisky: There are plenty of reasonable, ideological, politically-oriented ways that someone could critique Obama and his policies. For the most part Republicans have ignored them (perhaps they’re beyond the average Republican’s intellectual abilities) and opted for r@cist attacks: He’s a foreigner, a Muslim, a terrorist, a monkey, a r@cist(?), a Nazi(!). You know they really want to say he’s a “n—er”, but most of them, at least, are smart enough to know that’s taboo.
Some of the comments I’ve read about Jindal are also r@cist, but most focus on his homophobia, bigotry, intolerance and stupidity, which are fair game.
