Super delicious computer company Apple today came out against Proposition 8, which would (say it with us!) overturn gay marriage in California.
From a message left in the “hot news” section of Apple’s website:
Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights – including the right to marry – should not be affected by their sexual orientation.
Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.
You go on with your bad self, Apple! Work!

Lo-oove it.
Steff
Wow, that’s actually pretty decent of them!
REBELComx
That’s awesome. Has Microsoft done anything yet? I want to see these religious nuts try to boycott BOTH companies. Muahahahaha
Jon
Wow, I’ve never liked anything Apple until today. I think I’ll turn in my Zune and go buy an iPod.
donsnyc
I love Apple.
JJ
I wish I could afford an Apple laptop. I’ve come to hate my Dell laptop.
CHURCHILL-Y
Thank you apple! I’m glad I’m the proud owner of one of your products.
Having said that, I do realize that no amount of money whether from Apple or from average hardworking Americans like me or not even phone calls like the ones I have made to various people through CA in order to try and convince voters to vote NO on Prop 8 will not bring us the victory we GLBT people want. The state is overpopulated with minorities that hate Gay people and Obama being on the ballot won’t only bring the usual suspects to vote against us but it will bring out an obscene amount of voters from the most notorious minority group that’s prone to homophobic behavior where ever they happen to be living, from Harlem to Compton …………we all know it.
L
Churchy, what a sour, tired, pathetic old thing you are. Got news for you, babe. You are a minority. And even just one of you is overpopulation.
I love Apple. Have been with them since I got a Mac with 512K of RAM back in the 80’s. They rock!
Jackie
Yea, Apple!! I always knew there were intelligent people running the company. This just proves it.
Excellent product!
I belong to a computer club and we apple people are a minority – about 5%. A little less than the gay population.
I am so glad to not be in the conversations about which virus protection system to use and all the other weird problems pc users have.

Apple is NOW that lion’s share of the Computer market but mostly through I-POD sales until the under $1000 laptops when I will gladly go back from the nightmare of Microsoft Windows. Heck, they could pull the US out of a recession alone!
Churchill-y, don’t forget, Republicans vote on Wednesday, November 5th but you are in Massachusets so you must be ready to bend over for Governor Deval Patrick; a pro-gay Muslim-American.
Democrats, as the lines for Obama will probably take all of Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 please advise your Republican friends to Vote November 5th, or 6th for the elderly. It was a kind gesture, I think.
Scudder
Yay! This makes up for the original iPhone price plunge that left early purchasers pissed for paying $200 extra!
marcus
I love Apple, they are so cool and this helps people to see that voting no to that Nazi Prop. 8 is not cool either.
Dave
I am proud that I have bought Apple’s products. I own a MacIntosh desktop, Ipod, and Iphone. Now I can feel good about buying products from a gay friendly company. Way to go Apple! I will continue to buy your fine products.
John
I suspect Al Gore had a lot to do with this. The former Vice President is on the Board of Directors at Apple. And it is no coincidence that Tipper Gore was at a fundraiser for “No on 8” this week (where she pledged that her husband is fully committed to defeating the proposition).
Looks like the Gore family came through for us. Thank you Al Gore. And of course, a special thanks goes out to Apple CEO Steve Jobs as well.

Let them know how much they ROCK!

Good companies need encouragement to know that putting their neck on the line is worth it. I love my Apple goods, but now I”m even more psyched about them as a company. Send word. It takes 45 seconds to type a fast kind note.
The other side will no doubt be sending their evil messages against Apple’s generous, compassionate move.
Mr C
You BUM BITCH Churchill-Y,
You own an Apple product????????
Which one, a Granny Smith Apple?
Because surely not anything Steve Jobs run.
Your Wallyworld hating low wage ass couldn’t buy a i-pod from a thrift store.
That’s right queen I forgot you call it an eye-pard…LOL
And why did allow your sister to go to Pittsburgh and create that lie on a Black Man and cause all that commotion?
Do you have a “B” on your face also, BITCH?
mark
I’m glad we cast OURSELVES as Mac in the NO on PROP 8 commercials
Thanks Apple
M Shane
Apple has always been a Company with persons in mind: even the design is people friendly. What else.
CitizenGeek
This but one more way Apple has deserved it’s great favourability among gay consumers!
Johnny Underscore
Mark (no 17 above) hit it right on the head! Thank you Apple for helping to protect the fundamental freedom to marry.
Snoodle
So nice to see a major company taking a stance on this 🙂

Also: Churchill and Mr.C need to calm the f-ck down. o.O

I know from a friend who works for apple that they’re very gay-friendly towards their employees. It’s one of the reasons I buy Apple.

I think it’s great that Apple has chosen this PR route but the accolades that they are receiving is overblown. $100,000, while great, is a flash in the pan for Apple. It would be nice for a corporation to really take a stand and threaten to remove business from the cash strapped state of CA. Then we would really see progress. It’s not like they stand to lose much, if any, sales with this move.
It just seems sad that we expect so little in our culture when the issue at hand has to do with civil rights for any group.
