Former Who’s The Boss star Danny Pintauro made headlines last week when he sat down with Oprah to talk about his addiction to crystal meth and being HIV positive for 12 years. Now, in an interview with Us Weekly, he’s explains how he believes he contracted the virus.

“Believe it or not, with this guy I was actually safe,” Pintauro tells the publication. “We did use condoms. I got it another way, which was through oral sex.”
He continued: “When you put all of these nasty things together, like a compromised immune system, having been up for a long time, drugs, rough sex, all of that combined with lesions in your mouth, bodily fluids, it’s that easy.”

Many remain skeptical of oral HIV transmission, and there have been very few documented cases. However, according to the CDC‘s website, it is possible: “the risk of HIV transmission through oral sex is much less than that from anal or vaginal sex—but it is not zero.”
According to SFAF.org, “HIV still can enter through open cuts and sores, or possibly by infecting the lining of the mouth. … Once the semen gets past the mouth, stomach acid and enzymes in the esophagus kill the virus.”
Pintauro went on to say that he’s been unable to locate the man he believes be contracted the virus from, though he has been trying for many years.
“I have searched. I searched the obituaries because I had a fear that I’d find him there, and I can’t find him. So we’re going to keep doing it,” Pintauro says as Tabares nods. “Mostly I just want to find out if he’s okay. The lifestyle he was leading was really irresponsible and I just want to see if he survived.”

The 39-year-old actor-turned activist has embarked on what’s referred to as the “Beacon of Light” tour, during which he will go from event-to-event across the country to spread awareness of the virus and the dark spiral of crystal meth use. In addition to his magazine interviews and talk show appearances, Pintauro met with the team of U.S.-based non-profit organization World Health Clinicians for a conversation and posed for their anti-stigma social media campaign, HIV Equal.

I honestly don’t know. You don’t get sick the next day, so most sexually active people will never know with certainty. What I can say, is that it’s really no one’s business. However, as I stated before, I was on meth and behaving very irresponsibly for long periods of time. My recommendation is that everyone should take precautions, and of course, say goodbye to drugs like meth.

Back in the 90s there was a study conducted in SF among people who engaged in high-risk behaviors like prostitutes which claimed to have documented one or two oral transmissions. However given the poly-substance co-morbidity of much of the cohort, they weren’t the most reliable historians.
In the oughties, there was an extensive longitudinal study conducted in Spain of HIV+/HIV- couples that went on for several years. Tens of thousands of oral sex including ejaculation were reported without a single transmission. The same held true for men performing cunnilingus on their HIV+ partners.
Hypothetically their are mechanisms in place whereby one could become infected via oral sex, but the mouth is very good at neutralizing most ingested pathogens, especially one as environmentally fussy and labile as HIV.
All of which is to say all of the above are probably correct in saying that he was probably too high to recall getting fucked raw. He too is not the most reliable historian.

Back in the summer of 1999 I met some one at Cherry Grove. He did not say anything about his HIV status, But he did mention being out from work on disability. He said it was a mental breakdown kind of thing. In passing use an acronym. We fooled around on my boat.

So many innocent people died in the 80S due to AIDS within the LGBT community and to this day it breaks my heart I was born in 81 so I never truly saw how devastating that disease was to so many people and their loved ones.
THAT is what I never forget though ive read the history ive seen video footage of aids victims if you can watch that and still be holier then thou then you simply have no heart and possess no humanity whatsoever period.
Show more compassion and empathy and less condemnation and holier then thou attitudes.

@joe: Doctors have to avoid law suits so they will never tell you are 100% safe, and that is also why for example some water filtering product claims to be 99.99% effective.
Other examples: people on PrEP do not get HIV, but PrEP studies right off the start showed some people did get HIV and some did not, and for a very good reason, during the studies some people got off the medication because of side effect, or simply didn’t want to tale it anymore, the one that did take PrEP did not get infected, but the studies had to report the whole picture including those that didn’t take PrEP and did become infected.
Same with HIV undetectable, the actual chance to get infected by an HIV+ undetectable status person is probably less then a one in million, because there is zero virus in the sperm, but doctors cannot say that………..

Unless he brushed his teeth to the point the gums bled and then had someone come directly on the abrasions without his saliva mixing with the semen (which would kill the virus outright), perhaps he might have contracted HIV via oral sex.
