DVD: “Judas Kiss,” Bruce LaBruce Gets The Doc Treatment, And More!

It smells like queer spirit this week: Canadian bad-boy filmmaker Bruce LaBruce is the subject of The Advocate For Fagdom (above), while a drag performer and tomboy’s unlikely romance is at the heart of Brazil’s Elvis & Madonna and porndom’s Brent Corrigan goes legit in the  gay time-traveling drama Judas Kiss. Plus: Notorious box-office bomb Heaven’s Gate proves a masterpiece in its remastered Criterion edition. FIRST: A gay filmmaker gets an education in Judas Kiss
http://youtu.be/x9bvsLKCyXE Judas Kiss ($24.99 Blu-ray, Wolfe Releasing) Charlie David plays Zachary Wells, a 30-something gay underachiever with a failed filmmaking career and dead-end romantic life. Returning to his alma mater, Wells meets talented student Danny (Richard Harmon) and eventually realizes Danny is actually his college-age self. Can Zach help steer Danny in the right direction, thus improving his own lot in life?  This Twilight Zone-y flick—which offers a plethora of cute collegians (including Sean Lockhart, a.k.a. porn pup Brent Corrigan)—has been out on DVD since last year. But this new high-def Blu-Ray release comes souped-up with all new extras including commentaries with director J.T. Tepnapa and actors David and Lockhart, behind-the-scenes footage, a music video, and an alternate cut.   NEXT: Bruce LaBruce is The Advocate for Fagdom

ZombieRaspberry Reich and Hustler White, provocateur Bruce LaBruce is profiled in this entertaining documentary from director Angelique Bosio, who blends archival footage with interviews with LaBruce’s fans and contemporaries, including fellow gay filmmakers John Waters, Gus Van Sant and Rick Castro. NEXT: Elvis & Madona is no ordinary love

This romantic comedy from documentarian Marcello Laffitte is like The Birdcage meets Almodovar, with the added bonus of being set in Rio’s gayborhood, Copacabana. At the time of its 1980 release, this Western epic by Deerhunter director Michael Cimino was considered one of the worst Hollywood films ever made. (This was decades before Battleship.) Now, 32 years later, Cimino’s 216-minute director’s cut is being hailed as a visionary masterwork, and has been stunningly restored and remastered in state-of-the-art high-def picture and DTS sound. Extras include new interviews, trailers, and an essay by critic Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan. Vindication at last!
