Joan Rivers Blesses Gay Men, Chris Hardwick Wishes He Was One

I would run down the street and do a single at a place called The Duplex [with] Woody Allen, Barbara Streisand and a guy named Barry Dennen… all on the same bill, all written in pencil ’cause they didn’t know how long you were gonna stay.

A lot of gay boys came in. Gay men were the first ones that laughed… God bless gay audiences. [They’re] the most loyal to a woman. You know, they still come around. God bless them.”

Joan Rivers, talking about her early days in comedy to The Nerdist podcast host/comedian Chris Hardwick. Hardwick told Rivers “I wish I was cool enough to be gay,” in response to a question about his sexuality. (Episode no. 246, starting about 14:30.)
