Lesbian Couple Celebrates Russia’s First Gay Wedding

Irina Shumilova and Alyona FursovTwo ladies in Russia have managed to get married, but now that they’ve gone public they’re facing a huge backlash.

Here’s how they did it: technically, on paper, one of the women is a man. She’s trans and has been transitioning for a while, but her documents still say “man” so she was able to get a license. Clever girl! Our congratulations to the happy couple, Irina Shumilova and Alyona Fursova.

And they didn’t even have to pull a fast one by having one of them dress up as a man. They both wore white wedding dresses to the registry office and didn’t try to mislead anyone. They were surrounded by family and friends. Nobody at the office seems to have given them a hassle.

But they’re not out of the woods just yet. Once word of their wedding got around, anti-gay lawmakers started foaming at the mouth. One bigot says he’s going to try to have their wedding annulled.

Vitaly Milonov was particularly incensed. He’s the trollish lawmaker responsible for Russia’s anti-gay propaganda law, and he called the women’s wedding “an ugly insult to millions of Russian families in the future.”

You might remember Milonov’s previous nonsense: he threatened to have Madonna arrested for speaking out in support of Russian LGBTs, and also wants to take away the children of LGBT parents. He said that gay athletes at the Sochi Olympics could be arrested. He said that Tim Cook shouldn’t be allowed in the country because he’s gay.

So, he’s probably just jealous he wasn’t invited to the wedding.
