Manny Pacquiao’s weeklong homophobic meltdown took a disturbing turn after he posted a photo with a violently antigay biblical verse via Instagram.
Pacquiao has had a very eventful, extremely homophobic week: he compared gays to animals on Filipino TV, followed it up with a weaksauce Twitter apology, got dropped by Nike, and was scolded by former ring opponent Floyd Mayweather and NBA legend Magic Johnson, whose son E.J. is gay:
Apparently, Pacquiao’s apology wasn’t genuine, because after being dropped by Nike and scolded by Magic Johnson, he posted the following photo to Instagram:
In case you need to squint your eyes a bit too much to read that homophobia, it says:
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“Luke 6:22-23 [22] Blessed are you when people hate you, when the exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. [23] Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets. Leviticus 18:22 [22] Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a women; that is detestable.
Leviticus 20:13 [13] If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 [9] Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolators nor adulterers nor…”
Pacquiao deleted the Instagram, but not soon enough for someone to screenshot it. We’re not sure what’s more disturbing: the post or the fact that it got over 18,000 likes.
Pacquiao is still very wealthy, but he’s very stupid and pretty much done as far as endorsement deals go. He strikes us as…not very smart, so we’ll just chalk this one up to a few thousand too many punches to the head.
It looks like he just learned what so many others have learned before him: homophobia doesn’t pay, and this time it hit him in his wallet…where it counts.

The Philippines is absolutely dangerously obsessed with religion. I dunno why it’s seen as a “gay friendly” country. If anything they are bitterly tolerated.
Absolutely disgusted at the reputation my fellow sane Filipinos are getting from the moronic majority.

Firstly his objection to homosexual relations was rationalised as something animals do not do. If he got off his posterior and read a book he would find out that a percentage of every mammal species studied behave in a homosexual manner, dolphins and sheep being particularly prone. Not that facts have any bearing at all with religious fantacists, they merely constitute a mild inconvenience for people who determine what is true and false based upon their feelings dignified with the term ‘faith’.
The bible quotes are as usual highly selective… no mention of a death sentence for working on the sabbath, wearing a garment comprised of two types of fabric, death for having a wank (Onan)…
Then again what are we to expect from a religious system that says if a woman is raped in a city and fails to cry out she should be killed. It seems to have escaped the omnipotent author of the universes attention that said woman might have been gagged or have a knife held to her throat… point being the ‘word of god’ he quotes is the product of a bunch of bronze age guys who merely claimed it was from a god… Given how often this has occurred and the fact “god” keeps contradicting himself migth have ellicited a little more humbleness from this arrogant little fundamentalist… hope springs eternal.
Billy Budd
He finds that himself is a wild animal (he beats people for a living) with gay desires and then projects these feelings into other gay guys.
Projection
This involves individuals attributing their own thoughts, feeling and motives to another person. Thoughts most commonly projected onto another are the ones that would cause guilt such as aggressive and sexual fantasies or thoughts. For instance, you might hate someone, but your superego tells you that such hatred is unacceptable. You can ‘solve’ the problem by believing that they hate you.

Hmmm, he’s not a very good reader.
Leviticus prohibits tattoos. He has tattoos.
Leviticus prohibits eating lobster- his picture is on the wall in Mayflower Seafood Restaurant in LA. What’s the bet he didn’t hate preach to them?
Leviticus prohibits wearing garments with mixed materials- what’s the bet those fetching boxing shorts he wears aren’t pure blend cotton?
Leviticus says: Do not cut the hair at the sides off your head or clip off the edges of your beard- guy doesn’t even HAVE a beard and he appears to have had haircuts recently in his life..
Leviticus prescribes death to adulterers. The man has had at least 3 well publicised extramarital affairs.
I could go on with many of the equally nonsensical or frequently contradictory instructions given in the Bible but I’ll spare us all the intellectual torture.
Just like every other hypocritical bible basher he likes to pick and choose which of “god’s laws” he follows. And he, like many other christians, is inordinately fascinated with what men do with each other sexually.

@Invert: “Just like every other hypocritical bible basher he likes to pick and choose which of “god’s laws” he follows. The fact that homophobes only pull the verses from Leviticus that command homosexuals to be executed and NOT the ones that command the death penalty for disobedient children, non-virginal brides and a number of other “offenses” that no one in their right mind would defend as capital crimes shows their total lack of serious interest in following what “god” commanded. It just annoys the hell out of me that that more sensible people that call themselves “christians” don’t call them out on it. No one today could live in a world governed under unevolved iron age “laws,” so what is their relevance? God also commanded the Jews to kill every man, woman, child and even livestock in the conquest of the “holy land” according to the bible. How can anyone justify any of this old testament nonsense as relevant to today? But I guess bigots will be bigots.

Organised religion is pure poison. Religion and sexual preference are private; do what you want in your own house and don’t force what you do (believe in) upon others.

The Bible is a book of oppression and terror. Come to think of it – any religion that tells you to live by their rules “or else” should be forbidden.

@Invert: Thank you. I always wish that when Christian or other fanatics cite Leviticus to rationalize their hate that someone would respond directly to them that all these other prohibitions exist, and that they’re in violation of the Bible too.
Why isn’t there ever anyone who knows the Bible well enough to do so? Or to tell them that Jesus never once mentions homosexuality (or abortion), though same-sexual desire and behavior existed in His time?
On a different point, it’s refreshing that there’s almost no r@cism in these responses! For an article about a homophobe who isn’t white, that’s a rarity.

He has unknowingly forwarded LGBT rights in the Philippines, where it’s a few years behind because it’s still heavily Catholic. This could be the tipping point there. He’s gotten away with so much in the country because of his celebrity status & he thought he could with this one as well. The public is now talking about lgbt rights & gay & straight celebrities are no longer afraid to speak in favour of this issue. Sadly, he’ll still get elected.

This guys claim to fame is physically beating another person up to win a contest supported by a bunch of money people that he will never seriously be invited to joint socially. Not much has changed since the gladiator days…..
But maybe in another life he can make his fortune using his brain.
Random Homosexual
First of all, insulting Manny Pacquiao for any qualities not intrinsically tied to homophobia, qualities which may be shared by countless people who aren’t just not homophobic but actually gay or LGBT supportive (e.g. his physical attributes) is, to say the least, more than just out of line and disrespectful toward them, it’s a relinquishment of any moral high ground one might have, which actually lowers one closer to Pacquiao’s despicable level.
|”…he’s very stupid and pretty much done as far as endorsement deals go. “|
This is a dangerously counter-productive and erroneous ASSUMPTION. You think that because one famous brand dropped Pacquiao, we can all just give Nike a satisfied thumbs up and then continue to carry on as usual? Nike had ALREADY dropped Pacquiao once in the past, before RE-signing him. (See: http://www.forbes.com/sites/kurtbadenhausen/2016/02/17/nike-drops-manny-pacquiao-for-a-second-time-after-anti-gay-comments/#a42f9c5fabc5 )
Couple the aforementioned with the possibility that contrary to this author’s assumption, Pacquiao’s statements were not “stupid” so much as calculated with motives that should be taken at more than face value, as argued here: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more-sports/boxing/raissman-manny-pacquiao-don-buy-article-1.2537017
Furthermore, countless supporters will promote the idea that Nike is a villain for having dropped him and that he’s actually being targeted for persecution for speaking his “truth”. And those who argue that kind of thing in this kind of situation do gain at least some level of support.
Yet Pacquiao is most definitely NOT DONE as far as endorsement deals go, and failure to recognize that does the gay people in his country and beyond an alarming disservice:
Among the BRANDS THAT STILL SPONSOR Pacquiao are (quoted from http://www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/boxing-mma/pacquiao/123032-brands-remain-loyal-lgbt-comments ) East West Bank, Kia Motors, LBC, Rexona, Motolite, Datu Puti, Pizza Hut Philippines, Ricoa, PLDT, Bench, Robust Energy Drink, Cafe Puro, Alaxan, Organo Gold, Picar Place, AMA Realty as well as Chinese cellphone brand ZH&K.
His representatives claim he’s actually in talks for even MORE endorsement deals now. And as evidenced by the over 18000 “likes” his Instagram post received, Pacquiao enjoys a staggering level of support. Brands that continue to associate themselves with him through this with endorsements and by using him as a representative for their companies should be considered tacit supporters of his sentiments — sentiments which will undoubtedly play an influential role in justifying the marginalization and even violent victimization of LGBT people in the name of supposed righteousness.
In my opinion, the greatest way that the harm he single-handedly has the potential to do and is in fact doing to untold numbers of innocent people could be meaningfully countered is if a well-liked, well-known father of boys who is heterosexual, Christian and Filipino were to go out on a limb and publicly denounce his sentiments as shamefully un-Christlike, while also stating that he would be boycotting Pacquiao’s corporate sponsors. But I certainly don’t expect that to happen.

@Invert:
Thanks for the list of quotes for all to remember so they can easily be pointed out to others how ‘dumb’ they are compared to mature and modern attitudes and for that reason, why they’re simply not important today.
They are expressions of what very old religious attitudes ‘were’. The NT has much better and more mature attitudes to have, though there’s plenty of dumb stuff there too.
@mbfmark:
” …so what is their relevance? ”
Good question. Makes you wonder why such material was ever written down in the first place.
@Michiel Baas:
” Of course Leviticus is there. Hope he realises that the same book also condemns the use of tattoos on the body. ”
Quoters of those kinds of verses conveniently ignore what can apply to themselves.
What’s very wrong here to me is using any kind of scripture verse to essentially ‘sit in the seat of the scornful’.
Here are at least two good examples of what good Christianity is all about —
1. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love…Galatians 5:6
2. Christianity without good, quality works and deeds with all kinds of loving attitudes included won’t amount to a hill of beans…James 2:26

So, henceforth, unless the fight is cancelled, if you are going to vegas

@mbfmark:
I reread what this comment said and took note of how much ‘GOOD SENSE’ it expressed, so I thought it worthwhile to repeat it here again —
[How true…that no one in their right mind would defend as capital crimes]
It just annoys the hell out of me that that more sensible people that call themselves “christians” don’t call them out on it.
[I think of myself as a sensible person and so I’m using your own words to ‘call them out on it’. But keep in mind the limited audience there is here at Queerty. Why other Christians with a much larger audience don’t publicly draw attention to the bad or dumb applications of Levitical and similar writings…I don’t know]
No one today could live in a world governed under unevolved iron age “laws,” so what is their relevance?
[Excellent reasoning…’unevolved iron age laws’]
God also commanded the Jews to kill every man, woman, child and even livestock in the conquest of the “holy land” according to the bible. How can anyone justify any of this old testament nonsense as relevant to today?
[The perfect question…it is nonsense but it’s unknown to me why there is a continuing interest in this stuff. Thank God for the NT which puts into the religious dialog new and better things to think about]
But I guess bigots will be bigots.
