A San Antonio reporter named J. Michael Parker ran a front page story which wondered, “Can religious institutions save marriage”. Marriage, of course, is “under siege” by all sorts of terrible things. In an effort to revive hope for the crumbling tradition, Parker highlighted an elderly couple, Nell and Wallace Crain. The Crains had, according to the Parker, been together for 67 years. And they were. Until they died – a little factoid Parker neglected to include. He didn’t think it was important because the now deceased couple were “sweet”. It’s worth mentioning that Nell and Wallace died within two weeks of one another. Precious!

So what exactly is the problem. I read through the article and didn’t really see anything that offended me. There was no mention of gay people being allowed to marry. I agree under siege is a bit of hyperbole and prefer to think of marriage returning to its roots before the religious cult leaders got their claws in it. I like the concept of common-law marriage.
