Yesterday a marriage equality ban passed through the Republican-led North Carolina House quicker than a White Castle cheeseburger slides through the lower colon. This occurred after the Republicans tried sneaking the item onto the agenda and then rushed the bill through without any discussion or public comment (because ‘voters will get to express their opinion at the ballot box’). Nice.
But this Progressive Plus video shows that not everyone in the NC government is a dick. In fact, many of them are Democrats who think that their anti-gay colleagues are dicks too.
It’s worth watching the whole 4 and a half minute video to hear the Dems lay down the smack, but if you’re too busy doing crunches or something, here’s some of the highlights:
– Rep. Paul Luebke scolds lawmakers for not allowing any public debate.
– Rep. Ray Rapp says the business community does not like it when culture wars are unleashed.
– Rep. Diane Parfitt: “How shameful that the day after the tenth annivesary of the tragedy of 9/11 we are even considering an amendment…that takes away rights from our fellow men and women.”
– Rep. Larry Hall seems to claim that there are closeted lawmakers in the chamber that won’t speak up about it.
Our hands down favorite though is Rep. Alma Adams—the woman in the dashing top hat who mentions somewhat ruefully that she supports and believes in marriage so much that she’s done it twice: “14 years the first time, 14 months the second time… perhaps 14 weeks the next time, I dunno.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Keep reaching for them stars, lady.

Gee, thanks, Queerty—as a North Carolinian, I take umbrage with your implication that most of us are anti-gay jerks. Way to keep up the troops’ morale! Snobs.
Little Kiwi
Libertarian Larry….. there’s no “implication” – NC voted in Republicans. Those Republicans chose to honour the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks by putting their anti-gay bigotry into law.
that doesn’t make anyone else a “snob” – it makes the majority of voters in NC pathetic piece of shit bigots. not all. just the majority.

Rep Larry Hall and everyone else: Go there-Out ’em!

@Libertarian Larry: As my handle states, I’m from Asheville. I am not sure Larry, what your problem is about this post?! The NC GOP is completely full of mean-spirited anti-gay hateful bigots. Every Repugnantan vote FOR marriage discrimination (2 were present non-votes; 1 absent). ALL WHO VOTED ARE ANTI-GAY JERKS.
As the post clearly states, those opposed to the amendment, were in the minority — 42 NO votes — but voiced strong moral statements against the amendment.
So, 75 (65 Repugnantans and 10 Demoncrats) to 42; that qualifies that most are anti-gay jerks.
*****************
Cheers to the NC Chapter of the NAACP who issued a very strong condemnation of the amendment.

Let’s see: I saw several appeals to emotion, one talks about Jesus and her church, one says it’ll bar gays from participating in entitlement programs, and one asshole whose “real concern” is that it upsets the feelings of the motherfucking business community?
Not a single Democrat makes the case that the proposed law violates the North Carolina and US Constitutions and voting for such a law is an egregious violation of their oath of office.
I also noted that 6 Democrats sponsored the law, providing the minimal but sufficient bipartisan cooperation to secure the required 3/5 vote for passage. A sufficient number of Democrats will cross aisles in the Senate for the same purpose. As usual.
Democrats, as a party, are as hopeless as they are useless.

@Libertarian Larry: That isn’t Queerty so much as it is the specific writer who is a little too well known for this sort of crap.
Seek out any other stories where you also found similar problems in the way the issue was presented, the name of the writer might just be identical.

@Libertarian Larry: @Skeloric: So does anyone actually read the posts on this site, or do they reserve all of their attention and analysis for the headlines? I have heard more bitching about post headlines on Queerty than anywhere else on the Internet.
Libertarian Larry
@Mike in Asheville: Mike, my irritation isn’t with our NC lawmakers (whom I know to be largely bigots, granted), but with Queerty’s headline that “Not everyone in NC is a jerk,” which is a clear implication that the left thinks all southern states are poulated with homophobic morons, and whenever one of them displays behavior to the contrary, Queerty gets all self-righteousness in their claim that, “See, we don’t think that EVERYONE in the south is a hillbilly.” Face it, the prejudice of the East & Left coasts is palpable against anyone who isn’t one of them, and they forever feign surprise when those of us who live between Manhattan and Malibu turn out to not be a bunch of ill-informed rubes.
FYI, as soon as I can sell my house, I too am Asheville-bound. Great town. In the meantime, I’ll just sit back and envy you, ya lucky dog.

Once again, Daniel fails to do his research. North Carolina has historically been the most moderate and cautious of all the Southern States, extending back to the ratification of the Constitution. Our state’s current political climate is a fallout from the 2010 Congressional elections, which pushed many states to the right. The vast majority of North Carolinians do not have hate in their heart; the GOP won in 2010 because liberals and moderates with disenchanted with the Democratic Party. If you paid attention, the General Assembly successfully repelled attempts to get the gay marriage amendment on the ballot every prior year it came up.

@Suzygoo: That is, in my firmest belief, the only solution. The hypocrites must be ruined systematically and totally. Literally this nation needs a twilight of the idols.
