“When I was younger I used to refer to myself as a ‘non-op transexual,'” writes the singer-songwriter Justin Bond, “meaning I was a transexual who didn’t need to have surgery to assert what I was. But I was wrong because without assertions people can only make assumptions and I no longer wish to indulge or refute the assumptions or labels other people choose to place on me, I simply want to inhabit my very clear vision of myself.” Which means Bond, in addition to beginning a hormone regimen, is adding the name “Vivian” and assuming the prefix “Mx.” And so: Mx. Justin Vivian Bond is neither male nor female, but transgender, and you may refer to Bond as neither a he nor a she, but a v. [photo: Amos Mac, via]

All Hail The Queen – I do love Mx. Bond (aka KiKi)

I think Ms. Bond is great also… but not enough that I’m going to use totally unique forms of address and pronouns for her. If she’s genderqueer I’m willing to do hir, ze and certainly Ms. but it’s hard enough remembering logins and passwords for websites.
I’m kind of curious to see how ze takes to actually being gender variant 24/7. It’s one thing to dress up like Kiki for performances and be a femme gay man but altogether another to really be inbetween. Good luck J.V.
One suggestion, if you’re going on estrogen you better stop smoking pronto because it seriously compounds any potential problems with blood clotting.

@Gina: I’ve known Justin for almost 25 years. Trust me, 24/7 is not an issue. Kiki was a character. Justin Vivian Bond is the real deal, always has been.

I recall meeting Justin way way back in the 80’s when he was working @ ‘A Different Light’ in SF. He was/is a truly beautiful soul.

That’s wonderful for Mx. Bond. And I sort of love the “Mx.” prefix. Very sexy.
