In 2012, just four months after the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell went into effect, Morgan and Wells became a viral sensation and symbol of a new era when a photo of the two embracing made the rounds.

Sergeant Morgan had just returned from a six-month tour in Afghanistan, and did what any committed partner dreams of when they get home — he ran into the arms of his loved one.

The giant American flag just happened to be framed for optimal symbolism:


“This is a homecoming picture – gay, straight, lesbian, no matter who you are, love is love,” Morgan said of the photo at the time.
