The pressure keeps rising for North Carolina to do something about the dreadful HB2 bill that ruins the lives of pretty much everyone. Now the NAACP is getting involved, with plans to hold a sit-in at the legislature on April 21.
“We cannot be silent in the face of this race-based, class-based, homophobic and transphobic attack on wage earners, civil rights, and the LGBTQ community,” said a group called Forward Together Moral Movement, a project of the North Carolina NAACP. They’re being joined by a labor group called Raise Up for $15, so basically all of the good guys are involved. “Together with our many allies, we will coordinate a campaign of nonviolent direct action along with other forms of nonviolent protest that will instruct our legislators with respect to the rights of all people.”
“We are the laughing stock of the whole nation,” said North Carolina NAACP president Rev. William Barber. (Aw, no you’re not — even if Florida falls into the ocean, we’ll still have New Jersey.)
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
The General Assembly is on a loooooong vacation until April 25 (because nobody works less than the people running American government), so they might not even notice that the sit-in is happening. But we should probably trust the NAACP that they know a thing or two about civil disobedience and government disruption.
Sit-in organizers are demanding the repeal of HB2, which really is the only sensible course of action. It’s a terrible law, hidden under the guise of “religious freedom,” that cannot possibly be fixed by any means other than wiping it away completely. Even though everyone’s paying attention to the parts of the laws that prevent trans people from using the bathroom that corresponds to their gender, it goes much, much further. The law also prevents increase to the minimum wage (which is why labor groups are involved) and also makes it extremely difficult for any person to file a claim of discrimination against their employer (which is why groups that advocate for people of color are involved).
But in order to repeal the law before the sit-in, lawmakers would have to call a special session. It’s not going to happen, since North Carolina legislators are all generally pretty satisfied with HB2.
So get ready for a chaotic scene on April 21, a Thursday. Protesters will hopefully flood the legislature, make a lot of noise, get a lot of attention … and then something will happen? Maybe?
Check out footage of some HB2 protestors below.

Considering this legacy, I’d think the republicans in N.C. could do better in 2016.

The bathroom portion of this law isn’t even the worst part, and I can see why the NAACP has a personal interest. Hidden like a Trojan horse in this bill is a provision that prevents cases of discrimination from being pursued in state courts. Historically, most of the cases have been about race. Existing law in NC does ban discrimination based on race, age, gender and disability, but now the violations have to be pursued at the federal level, where you have only 180 days to file a claim and where businesses have an advantage.
It also prevents local governments from passing laws protecting LGBT people, and nullifies 20 such laws that already existed. The defenders of the law want you to think it’s all about bathroom use, because they can sway people by conjuring up images of little girls being molested in the women’s room.

Government officials not protecting the human rights of targeted minorities using religion as an excuse in violation of the religious rights of minority groups? Sounds like a Middle East government.

The republicans are calling this a bathroom bill to cover up the BS in this bill.. They are throwing red meat to their base and to the religious sector.. I’m glad William “Billy” Barber is involved.. This law will not stand..

Welcome aboard good people!

@JerseyMike: Reverend Fatso Barber (“lynch the Duke lacrosse boys! girls don’t lie about gang rape!”) being involved lends no credibility.

There is no way that black people in general agree with allowing men into women’s restrooms and vice-versa. The NAACP doesn’t seem to understand this.
What needs to be done is to separate the discriminatory anti-homosexual aspect of the new North Carolina law from the logical and acceptable prohibition on those who wish to use opposite-sex restrooms. Choose the right issue. Don’t allow the transgender movement to hijack the male homosexual rights movement.

@joeyty: you have your opinion and I have mine.. I could give two fcuks about what you think and Im sure you feel the same about mine.. good day to you.
joeyty
@JerseyMike: yes
JerseyMike
@joeyty: The difference between the two of us is I have known William “Billy” Barber since 1984.. I know the work that he does and the causes he stands for. You know him for one incident that everyone including the police, district attorney and everyone else involved believed that it happened. The one question that has never been answered, is why would DUKE LACROSSE team (all white except one)rent a low budget unattractive black stripper. There are beautiful strippers in the area (black, white and latino). I know the area. I did my undergraduate work in that area of NC. Something happened in the house. Crystal Mangum was and is a lair but something happened in that house.

@JerseyMike: She’s a liar and a murderer. But I also think she’s crazy so I have sympathy for her. The real blame is on Barber, the Gang of 88, Nifong and his cohorts who hid DNA evidence, the black hate groups (also homophobic) invited to Durham to shout death threats at the one defendent for being half-Jewish, and the gay activists of Durham and NYC that joined the lynch mob. Anyway, what do YOU think happened in that house, and why ?
joeyty
@JerseyMike: “The one question that has never been answered, is why would DUKE LACROSSE team (all white except one)rent a low budget unattractive black stripper.” That’s been answered from the beginning. They ordered white strippers, but the agency sent black ones.

@JerseyMike: ” district attorney and everyone else involved believed that it happened” You don’t know anything about the case. Nifong (and probably Barber) knew it hadn’t happened. That’s why Nifong lost his job and had to spend a night in jail. They were seriously fine with sending innocent people to prison. Barber, Victoria Peterson, Eddie Long…all the black clergymen of NC are as rotten and stupid as the rest of the population.

@joeyty: Stay away from politics. You have no clue what you are talking about.

@GC1985: That’s not politics. It’s crime history.
