SF Gay Men’s Chorus Cancels European Tour To Visit Red States Instead

Do you need to take some time and sequester yourself away from the world after this election? That’s fine. Go ahead. Practice self-care.

But when you’re ready to re-emerge into the world (and you will be, eventually, even if you don’t feel that way right now), you’ll probably want to figure out what comes next. You might want to let the San Francisco gay men’s chorus be your guide to reaching out. They were planning to tour to Cuba and China, but now they’ve cancelled that trip so that they can go sing in some red states. Because clearly we have some work to do in this country.

Gay men’s choruses may not be your cup of tea, which is fine. But good for them for trying to bridge a divide.

They’ll be traveling in the summer of 2018, when the country’s (hopefully) freaking out about midterm elections. That’ll be a particularly important time to let people in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee know that queer people are just regular folks who want equality; and also that there is hope and optimism and a community awaiting people who feel isolated in remote areas.

But what will their song selection be? That depends on how the first two years of this administration go. They might be joyful relief at how much decent people have been able to achieve even in the darkest of times; or they might be mournful remembrances of all that we’ve lost.
