That used to just be very chic people wearing beautiful clothes going to an exhibition about the 18th century. You didn’t have to look like the 18th century, you didn’t have to dress like a hamburger, you didn’t have to arrive in a van where you were standing up because you couldn’t sit down because you wore a chandelier.”— Designer and filmmaker Tom Ford referencing two of Katy Perry’s fashion choices in an interview from the new book Anna: The Biography, about famed Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Ford will co-chair the 2022 Met Gala next month, themed “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” We expect fewer fast food-inspired looks.

It’s easy to drag Perry.

as stuck up as Tom Ford can seem sometimes, he isn’t wrong. on the flip side, no one would watch the gala except for these over-the-top outfits.

Tom isn’t wrong. They never follow the theme anymore.

I wish he’d make more movies. His A SINGLE MAN, is one of the great gay films of the last decade. Stars Colin Firth and much younger man, Nicholas Hoult as lovers, fueled many a happy fantasy of what went on when the cameras weren’t rolling.

Great movie!

to quote a friend:
Totally agree. I want to see beautiful creative outfits that go with the theme. Don’t need to see a hamburger. But then if they focused more on fashion individuals instead of singers and athletes, overall it would be a better event. DESIGNERS, Models, Editors!!!

Clothes at the Met shouldn’t be boring. Then it’s just like the Oscars, Golden Globes and those red carpets are a snoozefest. However, I hate Katy. Her music sucks and the hamburger outfit is terrible. I did like her Margeial outfit years back.
Tom is a total snob but still love his fragrances, not so much his clothing. They’re a snooze fest too.

Shouldn’t Lady Gaga get royalties whenever these outfits show up in public?

Tom Ford is 100% wrong here. The ball the Met Gala is precisely where you do dress up like that. Its a party it calls back to old cotillions and the term “coming out” which is a transliteration of “debutante”. It is supposed to be over the top and theatrical. It is precisely not what 19th century dance masters and etiquette manuals criticized the business class for which was their habit of dressing in black and congregating at the doorway afraid to interact with the other people at the dance. Black tie and formal wear are not the same thing; formal = party, like at your high school Spring Formal while Black Tie is for business functions. May the days of men in black tuxedos squiring women appearing basically nude in public as arm candy be finished.

As an entertainer, Katy exhibits a comedic aspect; there’s something about her show that is not just musical, not just sexy, but also – comical. I think there is room at the Met Gala for a few comical fashion interpretations of the theme. That being said, I agree with Tom in that guests don’t really seem to be making sufficient effort to align with the annual themes; it seems more like they’re all just mugging for the paps, trying to generate as much attention as possible.
