Actor Ryan Sampson, 33-year-old star of the British sitcom Plebs, has taken to social media to shut down homophobes…by coming out.
In a post to Twitter, the actor noted that he had received messages from an Instagram user wanting to engage him in “homophobic banter.” Sampson refused to take the bait, posting a picture of himself with his boyfriend instead–the first public admission by Sampson that he is gay.
Hi y’all. So. I was on Instagram and I looked at my direct messages and it turned out someone was trying to rope me in to some (pretty creaky) homophobic banter. Huh! So, for clarity, here’s a pic of me and the boyf. Just to, y’know… straighten that one out. As it were. ?? pic.twitter.com/c7dZpfPfIy

“Hi y’all,” Sampson wrote in his post. “So. I was on Instagram and I looked at my direct messages and it turned out someone was trying to rope me in to some (pretty creaky) homophobic banter. Huh! So, for clarity, here’s a pic of me and the boyf. Just to, y’know… straighten that one out. As it were.”

…. Brit gays write as if they are Black Americans, is what I am gathering. Color me: fascinated .

Yep, i have never heard or seen a non American use y’all before.
Rob Moore
“Y’all” is a part of Southern speech in the U.S. regardless of ancestry. Oh, and I am a Brit from Essex who has lived in Atlanta for decades. I use the word a lot. I’m sure y’all might be gobsmacked to know that.
PoetDaddy
Is this show even available in the U.S.? Or is Queerty’s audience primarily British? I’ve never heard of the kid or the show. How does he get to be a “star” in the Queerty headline?
Gigi Gee
@PoetDaddy — What a ridiculous comment. He’s a tv star in the UK. That fact that dolts like you haven’t heard of him doesn’t make him any less of a star.
jpcolter
To GiGi Dee – why are you being such a bitch?
Rob Moore
He is a star in the U.K. That surprises those Americans who cannot conceive of anyone being a star outside the U.S.
Plebs was available on Netflix at one time, but I couldn’t find it when I searched just now. The basic premise is about three young men seeking to get laid, financial success, and gaining social stature while having fun in the suburbs of ancient Rome; hence, we have the word Plebs short for Plebeians vs Patricians who comprised the aristocracy. It’s a British comedy in the same way as “A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum” was an American comedy set in ancient Rome.

Way to go you.
I remember him on Doctor Who as Luke Rattigan in The Sontaran Stratagem and The Poison Sky he looked like a teenage version of Robert Downy Junior (looks and acting) and had done an adaptation of The General character from Batman comics he would have been perfection.
Rob Moore
Interestingly, I had the same thought about the resemblance to Robert Downy Jr. when I saw him on Dr. Who.
LthrboyGeorge
Unknown before this moment, and he’ll probably remain so.
Juanjo
To you perhaps. I do recall him from Dr. Who and The Crown. What internationally syndicated television programs have you appeared in?
Rob Moore
Another culturally narrow minded American comment. Do you realize that the vast bulk of the world’s population lives outside the United States?
