“This is so great.”
“Thank you guys so much for…!”
“Oh my gosh… this is amazing.”
“So how long have you guys been coming out to Fire Island…?”
Thus, the ice is broken between the Fire Island cast and longtime Fire Island locals Robert and Douglas, who reveal in the below clip that they’ve been hanging out in FI regularly for about 18 years.
“So you guys must have seen this place, like, completely evolve and…?!”
“When I first came out in the ’80s,”Douglas says, “you felt safe dancing with men or holding hands in the street — whereas everywhere else in Manhattan, you didn’t feel that.”
Robert adds, “It’s the only place on the Northeast that you’re really in the major majority. It’s your place.”
Cast member Cheyenene: “It’s amazing that new generations can… come here and experience all the same traditions and it… basically… where… everyone can be accepted…?”
The two-hour premiere is tonight at 7C.
