The first trailer for Greg Berlanti‘s much-anticipated Love, Simon has arrived.
Based on Becky Albertalli’s “coming-of-age coming out” novel Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, the film stars Nick Robinson (Jurassic World) and co-stars Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Garner, Miles Heizer, Tony Hale, and Katherine Langford.

The film tells the story of 17-year-old Simon Spier, who’s yet to tell friends or family that he’s gay, and who’s falling for a classmate online despite not knowing his identity.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Talking to EW, Berlanti says:
“There’s this one section of the film where Simon imagines this one boy and imagines them kissing underneath the mistletoe at Christmas. In every other major studio film, it’s always the guy and the girl. And there was something so powerful about it being just a guy imagining himself with this other guy in a film again that was going to be marketed and sold as a mainstream romantic comedy.”

Looks like a great story. Why is it that the company that owns it, 20th Century Fox, hates LGBTQ people? They hate muslim people? They hate women? They hate minorities? They do love to make money for sure!!! Yes the same people who own Fox News, made this movie to get our money.

No offense intended here, Larry, but 20th Century Fox doesn’t hate or love anyone. Like any corporation, they love money. That is all they seek: ever greater profits. If owning a network that trashes women and minorities makes money, that is what they will do. If being a hater goes out of fashion, 20th Century will close Fox and open Xof to express love for all. Whatever makes the most money.

I wonder how much longer there will coming out stories? Seems a dying breed. One of my young friends grew up in a small, churchy town in Northern California. He was always openly gay. He literally can’t remember when he came out. I’ve talked to his mom and she, too, just always seem to know he was gay. He went through elementary school as openly gay and I didn’t come out until after college. In another generation or two, I think coming out will be gone. In a few years, these coming out pics will seem as odd and dated as the Victorian novels where someone is trapped because the law won’t allow them to divorce.
Greg
Some guys are just obviously gay and there’s no need for them to come out. I doubt he went through elementary school openly gay. How would he even know about being openly gay at that age? He hasn’t even gone through puberty yet. People will probably always have to come out. When people have children, they are automatically assumed to be heterosexual. They are usually raised as heterosexuals too, unless like your friend, people can tell they are gay.
Bradsman
Hasn’t this movie been made 100,000 times already? Cute boy coming out? Can’t anyon make a gay movie about adults?
Kangol
I have to agree with Bradsman. I have no problem with stories of young love, coming out, and so on, but it’s not 1977, it’s 2017, so please, can we please have more films about ADULT gay, bi, trans etc people? You know, films that reflect the rich and complex lives we’re leading all over the US and the globe? Films that reflect the diverse tapestry of LGBTQ people?
I also sometimes wonder if Hollywood has issues with films that may involve adult gay men have sex. I don’t mean a 17 and 24 year old, young adult as they may be, but say, two men in their 30s or 40s or 60s. You know, the vast majority of gay men. Or bi men over 30. Or trans people, particularly if they’re played by actual trans people and not straight men or women.

As a gay man in his 60s, I can tell you a movie about gay men in their 60s having sex would be very short.

I have to agree with everyone, I mean, I love an origin story as much as the other guy but…
It would be nice to be able to move on from the “first time” story…oh and while we at it…could we move on from the “gay dies sadly/gays at extreme risk because x lifestyle—homeless, drugs, sex”
Yes these things do happen from time to time BUT please, some gay people have happy, healthy, fun (funny) lives and story’s that could be told.
Greg
Some gay people have happy, healthy, fun lives, but where’s the drama? Like on TV, if there’s a couple who are in love and get married, they can’t just live happily ever after, they have to get broken up otherwise it’s boring.
DavidIntl
I know the world has thankfully moved on, but I still find these stories touching – because it was such a different world that many of us grew up in.
And… is that a bit of an Easter egg that I see in the trailer? The triceratops on his desk, alluding to Nick Robinson’s role in Jurassic World?
