Horror mystery Knock At The Cabin has proved a box office winner… sort of. Opening at the end of last week, the good news is that it managed to dethrone Avatar: The Way Of Water from the top of the US box office after an incredible seven weeks at the summit.
Knock At The Cabin took $14.2 million. It narrowly beat the comedy 80 For Brady ($12.5 million) to take the number one position. Avatar 2 ($11.3 million) came in third.
That’s certainly good enough for the movie’s makers to be celebrating.
On the downside, it had the lowest opening weekend of any M. Night Shyamalan movie. Even 2021’s critically-panned Old managed $16 million.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Knock at the Cabin is based on the 2018 horror book The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay. It stars gay actors Jonathan Groff (Looking, Glee) and Ben Aldridge (Spoiler Alert). They play parents who will do anything to protect their daughter (Kristen Cui).
The family takes a vacation at a secluded cabin. However, things take a dark turn when they’re held hostage by four strangers who demand they make the ultimate sacrifice to avert the apocalypse.
Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) are two of the strangers.
The movie’s budget was reportedly around $20 million. Outside the US, it took just under $7 million. If it follows a similar trajectory to Old, it could take $40-$55 million by the time it departs theaters globally.
’80 For Brady’
80 For Brady’s performance will cheer executives at Paramount. The movie, which stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field and Rita Moreno, managed to tempt older audiences back to theaters.
“We’re pretty darn happy with the results,” Paramount’s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson told Variety. “It proves the old adage: you don’t need to make a movie for everybody, but it has to be for somebody.”
It’s possible 80 For Brady actually pulled in a larger audience than Knock At The Cabin, even if it took slightly less money. Many theaters offered discounted matinee performances of the former, with an eye on the elderly market.
It’s unlikely James Cameron will be weeping about Avatar slipping down to third place. The long-gestated sequel has now taken over $2.1billion at the worldwide box office.
Did you go to see Knock At The Cabin, and if so, what did you make of it?

I LOVE it when the right wing troll account exposes it’s new screenames so obviously.
As always, your trolling is sad and weak.

Not a fan of Shyamalan and I hate the premise. I also haven’t heard good things from anyone who saw it. I just don’t want to see it.
Squeak
Agreed ! The premise is plain stupid. I’m disappointed that Ben Aldridge would be interested in such a dumb script.
Mark Smith
Saw it last weekend and was very impressed. Original, well-written, and well-acted.
It’s also nice to see a movie centered on a gay couple that isn’t all about them being a gay couple.

“It’s also nice to see a movie centered on a gay couple that isn’t all about them being a gay couple.”
What does that even mean?
spacecadet
@dbmcvey – What that means is that even though this movie focuses on gay characters, the focus of the movie isn’t about them being gay. That’s great because this shows a film can have a plot that has nothing to do with being gay or sexuality and yet it stars gay men/characters. It shows the general audiences that just having gay characters does not equal it being a gay film. And I saw this movie and thought it was great in showing a loving gay couple/family, and just like any straight couple/family out there.

?? gay who said it is gay I only have seen trailers ????
DBMC
The protagonists are a gay couple with an adopted daughter. Also, the actors in the 2 lead roles are gay.

I’m curious to see it but every time I watch a thriller or horror film with a gay central character it triggers all my childhood abuse trauma.
toddlicious
It wasn’t great, nor was it “horror”… Save your gay dollars for something else. The only reason to bother seeing it is Ben Aldridge

I enjoyed it and would recommend it. Great acting, plenty of intense moments, and an intriguing story.
Cam
A big budget movie with a same sex family in the lead. Damn right seeing it.
cuteguy
So a movie honoring a homophobe like Tom Brady opened at #2 and is considered a success yet the #1 movie staring a gay couple isn’t ?
spacecadet
It has to do with factors like budget and expectations. Knock was targeted at a mass audience and people expect M. Night Shymalan movies to do well generally. Brady was targeting an older demographic who traditionally don’t show up in droves to theaters so that fact it had as big an opening as it did is considered a success story. With good word of mouth, more older movie goers eventually get around to seeing the movie too ensuring that it will stay in theaters longer and make even more money.

After reading the book and hating the ending and the whole Wen situation, I saw the film to see if Shamalamadingdong would change any of it and was pleasantly surprised that they did but even that doesnt change the fact that the last 13 minutes of this film are the worst 13 minutes of any film ever. Like what?????? Cheesus Tryst :O

“A Knock At The Cabin” isn’t a “gay” movie. It’s not trying to be the next “Brokeback Mountain”. The fact that two of the main characters happen to be gay isn’t inherent to the central story being told.
Yes it does touch upon their experiences simply as human beings dealing with discrimination via some flashback shots, but beyond that, it’s not really a central part of the movie or the storyline imo. That’s of course just my own thoughts.

What do you think a “gay” movie is?
spacecadet
@dbmcvey: A “gay movie” would be “Bros.”
