In a stunning political coup, openly-gay South Bend, IN mayor Pete Buttigieg has shot to third place in a new poll of New Hampshire Democrats.
Buttigieg placed only behind former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders, a shocking showing given Buttigieg’s relative lack of national exposure and youth. The poll, conducted by the Saint Anselm College Survey Center surveyed more than 600 New Hampshire residents, with more than 300 saying they planned to vote in the Democratic primary. Political insiders have long identified the New Hampshire primary–one of the earliest in the nation–as vital to establishing momentum in the coming primary race.
Related: Pete Buttigieg may have just made 2020 frontrunner status with this inspiring speech about being gay
“The emerging dark horse in this race may be Pete Buttigieg,” said the pollster, “who has gone from a virtual unknown to vault to 11% support, trailing only Biden and Sanders and ahead of Warren. His emergence as a factor is driven by a 33-point increase in name recognition, almost all of it favorable. He even carries a slight 16-14 lead over Sanders in vote-rich Merrimack Valley.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
The news comes on the heels of Buttigieg slamming Vice President Mike Pence for his well-known homophobic beliefs. At only 37, Buttigieg has enjoyed a meteoric surge in popularity since announcing his Presidential exploratory committee. If elected, he would be the youngest President in American history.

I wish Pete well; we could use a different angle than rich straight people. The next step is that he needs to show his organizational skills and issue management.
Be careful with these results as this is a “push poll”. It’s designed to have a specific result. How do you know when it’s a “push poll”? Notice that THIS poll includes names of people who are NOT declared candidates (Joe Biden). Right now the DNC is desperate for anyone other than Sen. Sanders.
I recall another “push poll” from CBN that included undeclared people, including the choice of Jesus of Nazareth. The fake Christian host, Pat, scoffed and laughed that Sen. Sanders, a Jew, was losing to someone who was dead and now has risen above him.
DCguy
Translation: A Bernie supporter trying to negate anything that doesn’t have Sanders 1st.
People may doubt the sincerity of you less if you guys criticized Republicans even 1 / 10th of the time you spend attacking other Democrats,
Xzamilloh
@DCGuy, this is one poll of many where the race is between Sanders and Biden, who hasn’t even announced he’s running yet. You can crap on Sanders all you want, but the momentum is behind him and rightly so. At least his record matches his rhetoric to the point where centrists and the right have to overblow everything he says to find a scandal.
He’s not for reparations? Not one Democrat running has said they support reparations.
He’s not for open borders? Not one Democrat running is for open borders.
He’s now a millionaire thanks to the sales of his books, but somehow that undercuts his populist message, even though everyone else in the race is worth millions?
eddiesocket
Biden has all but declared. This is not a push poll. Stop it.
DCguy
@Xzamilloh
Please point out anywhere in my post where I “Crapped on Bernie”.
I correctly pointed out that his supporters seem to attack other Democrats 100% of the time and never bother with Republicans.
As a defense you posted a comment that had nothing to do with what I said and apparently pasted some sort of standard defense you have for Sanders.
You seem very defensive on that front, but try reading my comment again.
Ronbo
@DCguy
I criticize tRump and Republicans at every opportunity. Read my comments. It’s DCguy who is attacking the Democratic front-runners for President.
DCguy
@Ronbo
Funny, this is now the second time I have asked you to point out any attack I”ve made on any Dem front runner. Please point it out. If you can’t why not? Oh, right, you’re lying and doing exactly what I said you were doing.
Xzamilloh
@DCGuy seriously, why do you guys do this?
You make these snarky passive aggressive attacks on Bernie Sanders and supporters of him and then when you get the clapback you clutch your pearls and go “What? What did I do?”
Ronbo made a decent statement that had no vitriol or animosity towards Buttigieg, but you couldn’t help but “translate” his comment into some dismissive “Bernie Bro” jab and then accuse him of not having that same energy for Republicans. At least have some courage
youarederanged
@Xzamilloh
It doesn’t matter who you or others support, what positions you take, what thoughtful or even neutral comments you make, DCguy is a hater. If he even perceives that you think differently than him, he attacks with his insults and nasty words. Then, when all else fails, he asks Queerty to silence you. He’s not here for discourse. He, like most of the self-righteous people he blindly follows, only wants to allow speech if it mirrors his. He is the opposite of courageous.
Ronbo
@DCguy I go by definitions. experience and facts. This is the dictionary definition:
Push poll
“A push poll is an interactive marketing technique, most commonly employed during political campaigning, in which an individual or organization attempts to manipulate or alter prospective voters’ views/beliefs under the guise of conducting an opinion poll.”
Irony is that you are so proud of THIS failed establishment system that installed tRump, you even wear the label “DCguy” proudly!?!
I can almost smell your fear.
Smith David
Sadly, he will loose. But, it’s good practice. I doubt we’ll see a gay president in my lifetime. Trump will have a second term. I truly hope I’m wrong.
boymikefl
You’re wrong. Dude, he’s 3rd out of what, 18 now? I was giving Bernie all of my money when our Pete was at 1%. Bernie and Pete are very similar, except Pete is half Bernie and Biden’s age. Pete says, “Time for a fresh start”. Pete will get the young vote and now some Bernie folks (me). Pete will win! Joe has angry women sabotaging him so, he’s out. Making jokes about it. Huh? Say it ain’t so…
jcoberkrom
The more I listen to what he has to say the more I support him.
mz.sam
Although Bernie has a locked-in 25% of the Dem base, Mayor’s Pete poll surge is cautious good news. I hope the best for his campaign of which I just donated to Pete for America. Looking forward to his April 15 announcement.
kirkthompson
I also have donated to his campaign..err Exploratory Committee…campaign after Sunday. He is articulate, intelligent, innovative, cool under questioning. I like him!
Diplomat-G
@Mz.sam
Bernie has locked in 25% of the dem base? Where? can you post a verifiable link to support that comment because that reads like a made up number.
Aromaeus
He looks good now until he’s on a debate stage with Bernie Sanders and has to explain why he supports a medicare buy in and not real medicare for all. Why he doesn’t support tuition free education. He’ll have to explain why in his book he described students at his college fighting for higher wages for the sanitation staff “social justice warrior” nonsense. Also not a fan of anyone whose part of the military industrial complex.
AgainNagain
You have proved yourself to be a socialist – the dangerous kind. My parents are from a socialist country and till this day they still call themselves communists. What a joke.
DCguy
Oh look, ANOTHER Bernie Sanders supporter who has nothing bad to say about Republicans but will spend all of their time attacking Democrats.
Xzamilloh
Thank you, Aromaeus. He reminds me a lot of Obama and that’s not a compliment at all. We don’t need this centrist nothingness that just masks doing the bidding of corporate donors and continuing the status quo under the guise of smooth talking an “civility.” Ultimately, Buttigieg won’t cause waves in the system because he is the system. His entire life is a testament to upper class privilege.
Diplomat-G
@Xzamilloh
Perhaps you should pick up a book on economics since Bernies Medicare for all includes buy-in, Increased taxes is BUY IN. Now I have no issues with the various mechanisms of how something is funded but to elude that the plan would be free from St, Bernie is silly. I love how you judged this guy without knowing anything about him or supporting your statements with any verifiable facts. You are simply another Bernie Bot Troll and if you’re not careful you will start a wave of #neverbernie voters. Bernie’s base does not have enough votes to get him elected.
Xzamilloh
Only a complete moron would think that Medicare for All means “Free”
Bernie Sanders has laid out how this plans to be paid for on his web site (It’s been there for years, mind you), so you can kindly go look it up as I am not allowed to post links here
And since Sanders is the clear frontrunner of those that have been announced, I see no need to entertain your nonsensical jabs of me being a Bernie Bot… because I’ll be that Bernie Bot. It’s about time the Democratic party became something for the people and not corporations and paying lip service to minority communities while doing nothing.
But stay salty, #StillWithering Hillbots

Whats wrong with being a Socialist? Communism is a nice dream (Utopian), but Socialism, or a version of it, is extremely doable. Capitalism, or whatever version of it we are plagued with here in the Western world, has proven itself to be quite dangerous, and we need to go beyond it.
iamru2
America has enough freelouders we don’t need more of them. Capitalism has its problems but it’s far better than socialism or god forbid communism!
Dwik27
I read a recent interview with him in TIme magazine. When I finished, I remember thinking – there is not one thought or statement in this interview that Donald Trump would be capable of articulating or even understanding. I yearn for the day we have someone intelligent in the White House again.
DCguy
Another person who looks good for the election. Frankly there are a lot of qualified Democrats running and any of them will be better than Trump. So good for Pete!
MacAdvisor
The dead and buried body of George Washington would be better than Trump.
DCguy
So true
youarederanged
@MacAdvisor and @DCguy
Slavery supporters! Makes sense though… classic Democrats.

Translation: The anti-LGBT troll is desperate to deflect the topic off of the openly gay guy running for office.
Sweetie, you aren’t even TRYING to be subtle anymore. Please tell them to send smarter trolls. The Mormon trolls for Prop 8 were smarter than you, and they weren’t winning any Rhodes Scholarships.
leftofstr8
So refreshing to see a young, smart, progressive, and gay candidate. I have donated a few times now, and am looking forward for the official campaign launch on Sunday. Sad that he will be discounted because he is “another white male,” but he is my favorite of the bunch. Would love to see him with Corey Booker, Kamala Harris, or Amy Klobuchar. Please no Sanders or Warren, we’ll just be handing it to 45, let’s make it a good fight!
Xzamilloh
Buttigieg is not a progressive. At all. And it’s absolutely hilarious that with Bernie Sanders as the clear frontrunner, we still have to deal with so-called liberals pushing for establishment Dems. Booker, Harris, and Klobuchar will not only lose to Trump, they will lose spectacularly, and then I can’t wait to see how Russia and Bernie get blamed for THAT, too.
ingyaom
The way I see it, since Biden isn’t actually a candidate, that puts PB in 2nd place – good for him!
tommyboy5023
I like Biden. He helped Obama ‘evolve’ on LGBTQ issues. But, he is a train wreck waiting to happen. Not only is Mayor Pete getting the poll numbers, he is getting big donations. This is important is such a crowded field.
MarvelUs
I think Joe and Bernie are good people, but are not election winners above their home state. They’re my age, so I’m just saying it: we need young blood to pull us together. I’m in for Kamala or Buttigieg or other contestants for the office. Trump is a pompous officious ass and has ruled like a dictator. He has to go.
djmcgamester
I wish him success. If he’s gaining this much traction it’s because he’s saying things people like. Someone has got to have a greater appeal than what we’ve seen in the last few years. Democrats need to widen their base. It’s been too narrow in recent times.
