It might be hard to top last season’s big reveal in the revival of Take Me Out, which offered an up-close (and wet) look at Jesse Williams and the fictional baseball team in Richard Greenberg’s Tony-winning play. Fans were so excited that the production returned for an encore run. But the 2022-23 Broadway season also saw plenty of new plays and musicals.
Some of our favorite queer talent returned to the stage, and while Raoul from The Phantom of the Opera sang “Why Have You Brought Me Here?” for the last time when the show closed after nearly 14,000 performances, we wondered the same thing while sitting through some of the season’s biggest flops.
With the Tony Awards on Sunday, Queerty counts down ten of our favorite Broadway moments while already looking ahead to next season’s first big musical — Once Upon a One More Time (inspired by the music of Britney Spears), which opens on June 22.

I’ve always respected Patti Lupone as a performer having seen her in Les Miz and Sunset Boulevard. I’m less of a fan of her off stage comments.
Observant
It’s lazy, misleading journalism to characterize Ms. LuPone’s actions as a tantrum. An audience member was flouting clearly communicated COVID precautions in the middle of the pandemic. In other instances, audience members were talking and texting during live theatre productions.
Ms. LuPone may be opinionated and outspoken but but she’s rarely off the mark, including her recent assessment of the diminished innovation and quality of Broadway productions. If she were a man, people undoubtedly would speak admirably of her conviction and assertiveness. Misogyny much? Sondheim, anyone?
The writers of this site would do well to recognize that this woman has been an ally her entire life and, unlike the countless flash-in-the-pan dilettantes to whom you casually and carelessly attach the label, actually is an icon in the performing arts and our community. I’m quite sure her unforgivable Queerty crime was calling out Madonna for the minimally talented, “dead-in-the-eyes” hack she is. (Enter Gabby pearls clutched breathlessly defending his clay-footed goddess.)
Do better. Educate yourselves; it’s not ancient history.

Well said!

I love that LuPone is outspoken and puts people in their place. We could use more people like her in every live theater and movie cinema; “put down the damn phone” and enjoy the moment is not too much to ask.

Yes, well said, Observant.
BTW, really enjoyed the Tony’s broadcast this year.
The format worked brilliantly IMO.

QueerTY’s sloppy journalism again. Chicago debuted in 1975, 48 years ago, not 27 years ago. They even mention choreographer Bob Fosse, who died in 1987. And sorry, while Jinx was a hit, she did not revive a dying show.

SHUCKED (at least play the album if you can’t see the show—-FUNNY AS AN EAR OF CORN!)
and
KIMBERLY AKIMBO (same advice—this one is a roller coaster of laughs and tears)
A very interesting night for the Tonys. Enjoy!
