We’ve asked online comedian, voice actor and chest hair model Sam Kalidi to create a new meme each week for Queerty readers. This week he considers the real reason for the uproar over Twitter’s new heart icon. Sam looks forward to all your hate mail. You can find him on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and at your local glory hole.

This should say “Why are American men so insecure about their sexuality”
Patrick Crawford
Nailed it
Brian
Straight-identifying guys are insecure because they are hiding latent homosexual feelings which they do not want to see the light of day. It’s understandable because such homosexual feelings, if revealed, would offend their wives and girlfriends.
Women find it threatening if homosexual feelings exist in men who are also attracted to women.
Sluggo2007
Why Are Straight Men So Insecure About Their Sexuality? Because, deep down, they all desire to fool around with other guys and many do it on the down low.
BigG
Homophobia=Insecurity
BJ McFrisky
Why is Queerty always trying to bring down straight dudes?
Jealousy?
Resentment?
Pettiness?
Intolerance toward those who are different?
Glücklich
I don’t care about he psychology of straight men. Is this supposed to spark crowd-sourced head-shrinking?
Blackceo
@Jimmy Nolen Araujo:
Bingo!!!!!
SeeingAll
@Jimmy Nolen Araujo: Compared to……which other men ?
Uphie Abdurrahman
Because their sexuality is socially imposed, not a result of self-forming of the identity?
Masc Pride
@Glücklich: Now you know the Queerty crowd simply loves a chance to accuse people of being sexually insecure/self-loathing. On the bright side, at least the target isn’t other gay people this time. lol
tdh1980
The only people insecure about their sexuality are people unsure about their sexuality.
moldisdelicious
Bullshit. The world has a homophobic mentality due to the bullshit that the Europeans spread across the world through religion. Folks talking about homophobic being a straight problem when homophobia affects gay people too where they are insecure about themselves. Too many examples.
DDstar1me
And ofcourse both the str8 black guys use the word “faggot”.
Wow! really? it would seem to me that gay is easier to write. Anyway, I could give 2-shits about how they feel. Most of them are on the DL anyway. Trust me I’m a DL magnet.
Kieran
When your society and culture has hammered it into your head over and over that homoerotic feelings are synonymous with effeminization, sissification and weakness, a lot of men might tend to feel insecure about having those feelings.
Marky
@moldisdelicious “The world has a homophobic mentality due to the bullshit that the Europeans spread across the world through religion.” North America, Asia and especially the poisonous attitudes in Africa are FAR more efficient at spreading homophobia around the globe. Buy a book. We got that stupid religion from Asia via Christian cults that were springing up at the time; I can’t remember the # B.C.E. or the Roman emperor at the time-=-but that hatred was imported. Another blanket statement from yet another person who sees complexity only within their own ethnicity.
tdh1980
@DDstar1me: Leave it to a [email protected] to make a post about straight male homophobia another forum to discuss those “terrible negroes” despite the fact that meme features homophobic tweets from white people too. The word choice may be more offensive, but the sentiment certainly remains the same. Bonus points for taking us back to the early 2000s with the long-since-debunked myth of the “DL” being exclusive to the black community.
GTT
Brian,
Are you talking about bisexual guys?
You are insane.
LucasH
Obvious answer is obvious. More interesting is this stupid debate over who is more homophobic – American men or European men. LOL. As if either one of us can hold the moral high ground here. Get over yourselves & get real.
GTT
LucasH,
Get real on this.
L Daniel E Kaufman
Because they created their own cultural closet?
Joe
They feel, if they’ve find out your gay, you’re automatically looking at them differently. I don’t meet straight men and see that, they do. They are insecure.
HKfCA
Straight men may be insecure about their sexuality because straight women won’t date date guys who fucked other guys.
moldisdelicious
@Marky:
You’re another UNeducated person trying to speak on things you don’t know about. Don’t even question me and the facts that I bring up that have been documented by historians and actual documents. Okay sweetie?
Look just because you came out the closet and are openly gay doesn’t mean anything. You can be just as ignorant as the homophobes you think you’re better than. Don’t use your sexual orientation as an excuse for a reason to be ignorant. Your sexual orientation doesn’t automatically mean that you’re smarter or more open minded than the rest of the world. Telling me to read a book. Boy, I can refer you to some if you ask. Bet you couldn’t do the same thing me because you don’t know what you’re talking about and is only speaking from your opinion. Not facts.
moldisdelicious
@DDstar1me:
What about closeted white men or those that call themselves discreet? I’m so tired of some of you ignorant gay people who don’t know much always running your mouths showing that you’re no better than the people you’re looking down on. Stop it. Some of you guys might have a shock when people around you simply don’t like you and only you because your personality is shitty. Not your sexual orientation.
Bauhaus
More straight twaddle from Queerty.
We have an abundance of gay and bi insecurity we could be talking about on here.
DDstar1me
Really Queerty?
DDstar1me
policing my comments?
DDstar1me
Queerty this obsession with str8 men is bordering insane.
drivendervish
If a guy is straight and only has sex with women he has no reason to fear what others “might” think unless he’s afraid it’s true.
MikeBeagen
Have you all read the Queerty Comment Policy? From the comments, I don’t hink you have. At any rate, hearts, thumbs, like, who really cares?
GuyllFyre
Perhaps they should have actually written an article and not just a headline?
Why would I be insecure about my sexuality?
Strangely, it’s one of the things that I’m most secure with.
Things I’m insecure about, well, my ability to find a compatible life partner, my job status if I don’t continue/further my education/skillset, my emotional stability, and a number of other things that don’t have a whit to do with my sexuality.
Captain Obvious
They’re insecure for the main reason so many of us hid in the closet for years/decades. Backlash, negative comments, and bullying.
How about changing the dialogue instead of going on the offensive all the time? Honestly who even cares what some teen and 20 something guys think about a heart on twitter?
Why is it we have all of these silly little whiny topics supposedly about “gay rights”? If this is all we have to complain about then we have nothing to complain about at all.
animaux
While growing up girls get body shamed as they reach puberty. On the other hand, boys get gay-shamed, and it starts much earlier, around the time they’re 4 or 5. It is much more serious because it attacks the ego, as opposed to body. That is why both gay and straight boys grow up with the same kind of shame. If they fail to cope with it, create a mental defense mechanism (by becoming more self-confident), they react like this.
M J Martinez Crogan
Ignorance
Brian
@HKfCA: Even bisexual women generally won’t date guys who have had sex with other guys. There’s a huge double standard amongst bisexual women – they’re hypocrites.
Amaurys Arias
Homophobia.
Aromaeus
I bet they all have micro penises.
Baba Booey Fafa Fooey
They’re probably gay or bi (which I’m on the fence about even existing).
captainburrito
Because that is how masculinity is constructed. Appear weak and you are liable to fall down the pecking order.
SonOfKings
@captainburrito: I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. In observing straight guys, to me it appears they are constantly jockeying for status. Continually accusing each other of being gay is playing the dozens where they insult each other’s mothers. A lot of straight guys are just natural born assholes too. When they are not attcking gays, they are making fun of the homeless, disrespecting women, backstabbing colleagues on the job and cheating customers.
BlueRoyale
@moldisdelicious: Europeans spreading homophobia through religion? Should I remind you the Pilgrim Fathers were PURITANS. And doesn’t look like USA need any help from Europe with homophobic Christians. So homophobic that call the Pope antichrist and heretic.
“Documented by historians and actual documents”. I won’t say how dumb the wording sounds, but I will say that with all your talking about actual facts, documents, and books, you didn’t cite a single source or even a feeble logic to backup your statement.
moldisdelicious
@BlueRoyale:
Read the book titled homophobia and then get back at me. Tired of hearing so many gay men choosing arrogance, ignorance and pride over education. If we were more educated, then our attitudes towards each other will change because we would be more secure with ourselves. That’s the problem.
moldisdelicious
@BlueRoyale:
And puritans and pilgrims came from europe. Once again, you’re showing your ignorance and arrogance. Get the book “homophobia” by Bryan Fone and we can talk afterwards.
BlueRoyale
@moldisdelicious: And Europeans came first from Mesopotamia and Babylon . and before that, from Africa. We can go back all you want, try to focus on the present, cause the only ignorant here it’s you.
junk4sts
I guess Twitter can’t use a thumbs up because facebook took that. In my Opinion, it isn’t so much that straight guys are insecure about their sexuality as it is that they don’t want to be associated with gay stuff or gay-like stuff. To some straight guys, being gay is kind gross. Lets Face it, the only dick a real straight guy is concerned about is his own, the only male body a real straight guy want’s to see naked is his own. Truly straight men do not what to be to closely associated with gay things, not TV shows, not music, not parties, and in some cases, gay people. Too much gay can ruin straight swagger. In the real world, it’s easy to “keep the gay away” but on social media, that’s much harder has the gay online community has a way of stalking (harmlessly) straight celebrities who may not appreciate the attention. Some straight celebrities play along better than others, of course, but many it seems just don’t want to be bothered.
Daggerman
..there are so many so-called straight men who want sex with other men…but they’re bound by societies rules and they desperately need to find a female mate to settle down with and have kids so there’s much more seclusion in that for them…I’m not saying everyone is secure forever in Marriage but it helps!!!
honestguy111
But Peep how they used black profiles to reinforce gay hatred towards blacks. The only time you’ll ever see blacks on this site! Hilarious.
